Hi! 😊

I’m currently studying Biomedical Engineering at City St George’s, University of London and I’m in my third year. If you have any questions about the course, applications, or what it’s like studying biomed engineering, feel free to ask, happy to help!

How do you find living in London? Is the accomodation and cost of living as disastrous as it sounds? Is there anything you wish you'd known as a Year 1 student as you began your course?
Thank you!

I've applied to university of kent, KCL, Queen Mary and University of Surrey.
So far I've got an offer from University of Kent but still waiting on the others.
Also KCL tends to reply quite late, so don't worry about that one taking a while.
Has everyone got more offers yet?

Does anyone know how good the graduate prospects are from KCL?

Hi! 😊

That’s such a common question, so you’re definitely not alone in wondering.

Living in London can be expensive, especially when it comes to rent, but it’s not as disastrous as it sometimes sounds online. A lot of it comes down to budgeting and planning. Using student discounts, cooking at home, and keeping track of your spending really does make a big difference.

Transport is another cost to think about, but things like an 18+ Oyster card, railcards, and student travel discounts can help bring that down quite a bit.

It’s also worth knowing that the university offers support when it comes to managing your finances. There are budgeting resources, financial advice services, and in some cases hardship funds or bursaries if you need extra help. You’re not just left to figure it all out alone, which makes things a lot less stressful.

As for what I wish I’d known in Year 1, I wish I’d realised sooner that everyone feels a bit overwhelmed at the start. It takes time to settle in, find your routine, and make friends. You don’t need to have everything sorted in the first few weeks. I’d also recommend putting yourself out there and trying new things, even if it feels uncomfortable at first. Go to networking events, apply for opportunities, try a new sport, join a society. Getting out of your comfort zone is where a lot of growth happens.

London can feel big at first, but it quickly starts to feel familiar. And the opportunities you get from being here are honestly worth it.

Hope that helps!
