A-Level Choices

Hi!
I'm currently in Y11 choosing my options for Sixth Form/College.
My current choices (which could change) are:
Law
Politics
Business Studies

My goal is to have a career in Law, preferably Corporate/Commercial Law, but I'm still exploring options like degree apprentices vs university.

I really want to change Business Studies to Sociology (I know Business aligns well with Corporate Law - but I would prefer to do Sociology). I've seen multiple people do Sociology, who aspire a career in Law.

However, I have seen a few comments of how sociology is a 'soft subject' and that some uni's/companies don't prefer it? I'm confused in regards to his.
It would be extremely helpful if anyone who is currently on a path to Law, has done sociology as an A-Level or someone who knows advice to clear these confusions and give me a few tips.

Thanks!

I'm not on a law path, but I did do A-Level sociology.
It should be fine for you to switch to sociology. In terms of getting into uni, it's only really a problem if the subject you're applying for needs a science, which you won't need for a law degree. Also, depending on which syllabus you're following, sociology does have a module on the sociology of crime which you might be interested in.

Hi there 🙂
I am a final year law student at the university of Kent. I do not know much about the requirements of apprenticeships but I could share what I know about university. A lot of universities do not have specific subject requirements for law and they want you to get the required grades rather than being bothered about which subjects you got them from. For example, my university does not have a specific subject requirement. I did Business in sixth form but I know many people in my course who did not.
However, some universities might have a preferred subject or exclusion list so I would advice you to check directly from the website of the unis you are most interested in, just to be on the safe side☺️
If you have any other questions please feel free to ask away.

Best wishes

Sociology is only labelled a soft science! Definitely not a soft subject! most universities recognise the value of an essay subject like sociology and how it gives you incredible essay proficiency and a unique insight especially in law. From my friends that studied business it doesn’t sound like the move, sociology is far more interesting and far more transferable (if you change your mind about uni courses). Unless youre applying for corporate/ commercial law courses specifically, sociology is 1000000% the move as business studies is actually viewed as much less rigorous lol!!!! Sociology is really rising in the ranks as a well regarded alevel so dont listen to anyone who says otherwise. I did politics and sociology at alevel and they really go hand in hand, a lot of my knowledge was transferable between the subjects and really helped me to understand both subjects in a more profound way ESPECIALLY in the education section of sociology which is all about different UK governments and their education policies, hello??! Dream combination!!! You will really have a unique perspective in both subjects that will give you a noticeable exam advantage, but also just help you understand the content a lot more x law, politics and sociology is a wonderful combination i promise you xx  and will not hinder your application in any way, if anything it will help you!!! (Coming from someone who got A’s in both sociology and politics)

As well as this, sociology has a whole section on crime and deviance which im sure is very relevant to law, the political theory you’re studying in politics will scarily overlap with sociological perspectives (i literally was forgetting which subject said what). And law will give you such a good insight when it comes to studying the judiciary in politics, seriously this is a golden combination, just look into uni courses that focus more on what you want to specialise in and youll be grand! Good luck with everything!!
