a level subject

i’m in year 11 and have no idea what i want to be in the future. it took me time jst to pick my a level subjects but i finally picked that i want to do economics and psychology. i’m still unsure of what i want to do as the 3rd subject. i was thinking either business or sociology since i’m currently doing it for gcse. however i’m not so sure about the step up from gcse level to a level level. Is there any other subject that would be a good combination with these or that would help me to kind of broaden my choices for uni.

HEY DIV(a)!
That's honestly fair enough, it's a REALLY big ask to determine your future at BASICALLY the start of your life. :dontknow:
Your choices of economics and psychology is REALLY strong and already opens LOADS of pathways. :beard:
A third choice doesn't really have to be too specific but I would recommend either maths, geography, philosophy, religious studies, english literature or politics. :smartass:
I would recommend doing a third subject with characteristics you like.
If you want to know why i recommended these, just ask!
Hope I helped!!! ❤️ :dancing2:

Yeah econ and psy are extremely solid, can you not take both business and sociology in the first year then drop one? But looking at your options, sociology may be slightly more interlinked with econ and especially psy so... yh hopefully that helps

Hi @anna_bA3 ,

It's completely fine to not know what career you wish to pursue.

When it comes to choosing your third subject there are a few ways to go about it:
1) Head onto university websites and see if there are specific A-levels requires for economics or psychology courses. This way, you can see which A-levels may be desirable if you choose to pursue your studies further.
2) Look into careers that align with the A-levels you are choosing and research if there are additional A-levels that are desired. This will not only give you an idea of what A-levels to choose but also what careers are out there.
3) What is your passion? Choosing an A-level based on the passion to learn more about a subject you enjoy can really open doors. It can show you the jobs available and put you on a path for a career that is fun for you.

You do not need to have it all figured out with the career you wish to do, you may even change your mind many times before deciding what to do after A-levels and that is okay as you are still continuing to progress. I recommend thinking about topics that interest you or hobbies that bring you joy and researching the jobs that align with them. A good job is important but I truly believe enjoying your work is the priority. 😊

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,
-Sophia (University of Lancashire)

Dont do econ and business together. Econ, psychology and sociology is a great subject combo 🙂 you’d be able to pursue social sciences or humanities at uni with this most likely

If you can handle it, i would suggest Maths. It can open doors to more science-y subjects. If you want to study Econ then Maths would be a good subject to have in your portfolio.

They subjects have a lot of overlap which some unis can take issue with because its like doing 1.5 a levels rather than 2, similar to how some uni courses take issue with double maths

Hi @anna_bA3 👋

It is great to see that you're already thinking about university and your future, that is a really positive step. Good steps would be to:

Choose subjects you enjoy and feel confident in

Think about skills, not just subjects. A-Levels help you develop important skills like essay writing, analysis, problem-solving and independent study, which universities value

Avoid overloading yourself. Pick a combination that feels balanced and manageable

Focus on picking A-Levels that you would enjoy!

You're doing the right thing by thinking ahead, but remember there's still plenty of time to figure things out.

If you have any more questions, please let me know. 💜

Good luck with your GCSEs!
