A level choices

hello, I am currently considering doing maths history and politics a level so that I can study law at a Russel group university such as ucl, but I have heard many people say that English lit is the better choice instead of history because it is more beneficial at Russel group universities. I would've done English lit, history and politics but I really want to do maths as it's been my passion for a long time and I'm currently am getting grade 9s. I was considering doing 4 a levels but that seems a bit much especially with 3 essay based subjects. currently I am enjoying both history and English lit but the only reason I'm hesitating to do English lit a level is because of poetry, other than that I enjoy it and as for history I really like the course my school does for a level. is there any advice that someone could give me as I am in a bit of a dilemma ?

English literature is fantastic. I'm biased but everything you learn aids you immensely learning about other people, understanding the world more directly, empathy, analysis, literary techniques. It's great fun. Plus history is tiring (I do both). I would recommend English if you'd like something fictional to really understand different perspectives. What English texts does your school offer?

English will not be required for law, choose the subject that you will enjoy the most 🙂

Hi,
Personally, I think both options give you a wide variety. For example, English Literature gives you the understanding about the world in general and how people view certain situations. It allows you to become more empathetic and analysis situations better. On the other hand, History gives you a an understanding of the laws and its background, but I think as you are taking Politics, that basically covers it. So if you are a person who wants to analyse deeper, I would recommend taking English lit. Or if you want to be more technical and deepen your understanding, take History

Here is some of the information I gathered from the schools course guide:
Examples of texts studied include: Othello by William Shakespeare; The Death of a
Salesman by Arthur Miller; selected poetry by John Keats and William Blake; The
Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Attwood, and The Kite Runner by Hosseini.
The course also offers the opportunity to apply your analytical voice to your own
choice of text through your coursework, which makes up 20% of your grade.
Personally I really look forward to maybe studying some of these texts such as the handmaids tale as I already have the book and plan on reading it during the summer, also I almost always love studying the novels but it is the poetry aspect that makes me hesitate.

You dont have to do english to get into law.
There are no specific subject requirements. Just whatever grades they specify.
So id stick with the subjects you have already chosen. They sound like solid subjects. You are obviously doing very well in maths. And you really enjoy history.
Stick with the 3, then you can do an EPQ or something else as well.

can my epq be something English based to help with my application or does it have to link directly to law or the subjects I will be studying

Your EPQ can be anything you want.
If you would rather do something english based (think you would enjoy it more and do better in it) then do something english based. However if you want to do it in something law related (to get an idea of law related matters) then you can do that.

Those are really good options! I've read most of them and they're fantastic. Keats and Blake are wonderful, even if you don't like poetry, and I would absolutely recommend if you really like English. If you like, you can try English and then change over if your school allows it. I think History is more difficult and there is more content, but it depends on what you would enjoy more. History is also heavier and more strenuous, so I would recommend English.

I’m in my final year doing literature and I can tell you it’s a very dem ding subject. A lot of people underestimate it but it requires a lot of focus and revision. The coursework is also a huge part of it. I also applied to do law at Russell groups and I can assure you it doesn’t matter what subjects you do as long as you get the A*AA that they want.
