Mature student starting vet med at Nottingham

Hello,

I’m starting as a mature student (age 24) at Nottingham this April studying vet med. I am wondering if anyone can give me any tips of topics can learn / refresh my brain before starting in April. I did a year or human med and decided it wasn’t for me, then have had 3 years out of education. It also feels like a lifetime ago since I did my alevels and I’m not sure anything stuck in my brain!

Would going over things like cell biology, basic chemistry etc be helpful? Or is it not really relevant? I just don’t want to be behind from the get go. I am also working as a vet nurse assistant at the moment, and I do a lot of overnight post surgical monitoring shifts so that would be a good time for me to hit the books.

Or is there anything else you would suggest could be handy to learn pre 1st year? Maybe things like the basic musculoskeletal system of different animals, or anything else?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Anatomy anatomy anatomy.
Notts student here - please just take a rest before you start! To be blunt, vet school is exhausting, so don't burn yourself out before you get there! Have a big rest now before the madness begins! Nottingham are veryyy practical-based, so you'll probably find it way easier to learn the anatomy once you start actually being given bones and tissues to handle and examine.
If you absolutely MUST do some prep, then just get one of the anatomy colouring books and slowly work your way through it, making flashcards as you go (you will need this for first year).

Also, (it wasn't this way when I started) but I believe the first year at Notts begins with a couple of months focusing on animal care, welfare and husbandry, before you move onto the academic hard science stuff. So you'll probably have forgotten any revision you do by the time you actually meet the anatomy classes anyway. The rest of first year is spent learning the cardiorespiratory and neuromuscular/skeletal systems of healthy animals, so you will get the chance to go over these things to a vet school level.

Hi, yes I imagine vet med is tiring! I’m not trying to do anything to burn myself out,I’m just wanting to start having a look into some topics.

Anatomy colouring books and flash cards seems like a great idea! Thanks

All of it: find a veterinary anatomy flashcard deck and start on that. By the time you start veterinary school you will have a solid anatomy knowledge as a superpower and it will make your start in school a lot smoother.

A good veterinary anatomy book will contain probably too much detail so advice from other existing students will be needed to know how much to learn.

Whilst I was learning anatomy I never found colouring books that useful to be honest.

Hey! I am mature student (25) starting vet med in nottingham this April! Good to see people starting vet med with similar experience as I do! Was wondering the same thing, but don't know where to start as there is a lot to learn 😬 Don't want to be nosy, but are you staying in SB accomodation as well for the first year?

Hey! Nice to know there will be other mature students. I’m going to have a look for some flash cards like suggested above, perhaps online ones and if I find any I’m happy to share them.

I have a dog that I am brining with me so student accommodation is not an option. I am going to view a few shared houses this weekend with students in different years. So hopefully one of those will work for me!

If you want to chat about anything else fell free to give me a message ☺️
