How to choose a career after media studies?

I've studied media studies and done some journalism modules. I'm looking for advice on next steps and possible careers or uni courses that would suit me. Anyone with experience in this field, what jobs or degrees did you find rewarding? 😊

Hi,

This is a really common position to be in after Media Studies. I studied media and then specialised further by studying Journalism BA (Hons) at Teesside University. I now work in content creation and curation alongside my studies.

One key thing to know is that media isn’t one single career path. The skills you build, such as writing, research, storytelling, digital awareness and understanding audiences, transfer into a wide range of roles.

Depending on what you enjoyed most, you could consider career paths such as Journalism / Journalism & Media, Media & Communications / Digital Media, or Media Production / Creative Media. I personally enjoyed the writing, social media, digital marketing and graphic design elements of Media Studies most, which helped guide my own career direction.

My main advice:
Look at course modules, not just course titles
Follow what you actually enjoyed doing
Don’t worry about locking yourself into one career, media careers evolve.

I’d also recommend speaking directly to universities, visiting an open day really helped me. At a Teesside University open day, talking to someone from the course helped me see how journalism can lead into a variety of media careers, not just the traditional routes.

A uni course that I think would be right up your alley would be the Creative Media Production at the University of Staffs as it offers a very large range of different media modules such as journalism and Tv production, and Media law! also its super rewarding being able to watch the TV show that you helped create!

I’m currently a third-year Media Production student at BCU, and I would highly recommend the course to anyone interested in media. The course is extremely broad, offering training across a wide range of skills, with fantastic opportunities to collaborate with students from other disciplines.
