Oxbridge Reapplication

So, I got rejected from Oxford to study Chemical Engineering, I guess mainly because my PAT was quite disastrous (and maybe because my PS was too ChemEng focused? I applied to ChemEng, but the actual course studied there for the first two years is Engineering Science).
I am thinking about reapplying to Cambridge, but now I'm unsure whether this would be to Physical Natsci or Chemical Engineering. ChemEng has better job opportunities I suppose, but I don't love the fact of having to do Biotech too (although I find it really interesting).

I'm international, have a predicted of 45 in the IB DP (HL Maths AA, Physics and Chem), 9999888887 at IGCSE and, according to my Headteacher (who was a Cambridge student), a really good PS (although I would obviously have to change it). Also, I'm currently studying for the ESAT for Imperial and I can say it's definitely going way better than the PAT.
What do you think? Is reapplying a good idea (also, the possibility of going to uni in my home country whilst reapplying during this "gap year" exists, and is likely to happen)? Also, anything regarding Natsci vs ChemEng? I need helpppp

I'd say reapplying is definitely possible.

I recently got rejected from Cambridge for Chem eng / Biotech since my ESAT scores weren't great. I started studying for it too late and the time pressure got to me 😔 but if you're doing ENGAA / NSA past papers and they're going well then that is certainly a good sign .

For Chem eng vs Phys NatSci, maybe you can factor in whether you'd prefer learning about / having a career around the science governing industrial processes, product manufacture and designing these systems (Chem eng) or focusing more on scientific theories and working in labs carrying out experiments, writing up reports etc (NatSci).

It is possilbe that if you reapply to oxbridge you may not get accepted since it is very competitive, so make sure you're still doing a course you enjoy whether its at a uni in your home country or elsewhere, but if you prepare well for the admissions test and interview you'll have a solid chance.

Hope this helps )

The thing is, I think I might enjoy studying Phys Natsci more (it's literally my dream world, studying Maths, Chem and Physics), but the job prospects don't seem too great, and I don't wanna end up working in something completely unrelated to what I like/have studied. I have thought about doing only a 3-year Natsci Bachelor and then doing a Masters on ChemEng, but that would be pretty expensive, being international. I'll have to think quite a lot about this.

Anyways, thanks for your opinion and sorry about the rejection. Are you planning on reapplying?

Oxford and Cambridge do not often accept students that are already doing degrees elsewhere. In case of Uk students virtually does not happen .Email admissions and ask about international students in this scenario.

Yeah, I'd planned on doing that after decisions day, but maybe I should just do it now?

You can’t reapply if you have started uni elsewhere, including in another country.

Saw somewhere they don't care that much if it's from a foreign uni, but I'm gonna email some colleges to check. Either way, might reapply from a different course (that's allowed, in theory).

The official guidance: https://uni-of-oxford.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1777/~/can-i-apply-for-an-undergraduate-degree-course-if-i-am-already-studying-at

“If you are currently studying at a university outside the UK and are thinking of applying to Oxford to start the first year of an undergraduate course, you should make very clear in your application why you do not wish to continue on your current course. This is important as we only consider such applications where there are strong reasons for moving university after the first year. Please note we are not able to give examples of these reasons as applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis”

Just in case anyone's interested, I've emailed the colleges and a few of them have already answered saying it's possible (no course change needed whatsoever)

Did they say you needed a compelling reason to change though.Did you ask that question?
Genuinely interested in their response.Thanks.

So far, Pembroke, King's, Hughes Hall, Newnham, Trinity, Trinity Hall, Christ's, St Edmund's and Caius have responded. All of them have said there's no problem whatsoever, although Caius has said the policy might change for 2027 entry, so they cannot confirm this 100%. St Ed's is the only one that has said I'd have to explain why I wanted to change unis in the case I applied to the same course already studying at a foreign uni.

Hi! How do you know your PAT was a disaster? Do you already have the results? I'm asking because I got rejected as well but still haven't received my score

Hey! I submitted a feedback request back in November. Haven't heard back yet but I just know the PAT did not go well. When I came out of it, I felt no confidence whatsoever, didn't even have time to finish the exam. It's basically just a hunch, also taking into account that I hated every minute I spent revising for the Physics part of the PAT (not literally, but it did get pretty frustrating).

no worries, happy to help! It seems they're quite strict with reapplying from UK unis but have no restrictions regarding reapplicants from foreign unis.
