I have a conditional offer at Newcastle any advice (:

Hi, I’ve received a conditional offer from Newcastle University to study Politics and Sociology. I was wondering if any current or former students on this course (or a similar one) could share their experiences. I’d also love to hear from anyone else who’s applied for or is doing the same course. Any advice would be really appreciated!😁

Most Uni will run offer holder visit days in the spring term, and these area very good opportunity to look around at the Uni more critically, find out more detail about the course, and talk to current students about the course and what they enjoy about being at Newcastle - they will be happy to tell you.

Firstly, congrats on receiving your conditional offer!

In 2026, we are holding 3 Offer Holder Experience Days in February, March and April. The offer holder day for Politics and Sociology will take place on Saturday 28th February.

This is a perfect opportunity to:

explore our campus

learn about our facilities and student services

delve deeper into your chosen subject.

You'll have the opportunity to meet current students and chat to academics from your course. Find out more below about what to expect at our Offer holder page.

Tips from a past student!

Sometimes it is hard to think of questions entailing a degree you have never done. Our Politics and Sociology profile page is there to provide you with the shared experience of our graduates so that you can explore futures in your degree!

If you go to our Politics and Sociology degree site and navigate to 'modules', you are able to explore the learning method and access our reading list. This could be beneficial for you exploring some of the course and refreshing your knowledge on what our course entails.

Hey!😊 Congrats on your conditional offer from Newcastle!

I'm studying Sociology with Psychology and Data Analytics at City St George's, so not exactly the same course, but there's a lot of overlap with the sociology side.

In first year, I did modules like:

Intro to Sociology: covering things like social theory, inequality, power, culture and how different institutions in society work.

Psychology: introductory topics including the biological approach to psychology and how the brain and nervous system influence behaviour.

A quantitative methods module in sociology, where we learned how to analyse data, work with surveys and use software like SPSS.

A qualitative methods module in sociology, focusing on interviews, observations and how to analyse non-numerical data.

I found sociology really interesting because it helps you think critically about everyday life and bigger social issues, while also building practical research and analytical skills that are useful for lots of careers.

Even though Politics & Sociology will have its own focus, you'll probably cover similar foundations in Sociology in first year and then specialise more in later years.

My main advice would be to try to keep up with the weekly readings, start essays early and make a clear plan/structure before writing, and get involved in seminars (even a little at first) as it really helps with understanding the content and building confidence. Also, your lecturers are always there to help, so I'd definitely recommend using their office hours to ask any questions your unsure about, they're really supportive and helpful.

Good luck- I'm sure you'll enjoy your course and make the most of your time at uni! 😊
