Hi. Which source question are you struggling with? Reliability, accuracy, or conclusions?

Accuracy

Hi, I achieved 100% in my Higher Modern Studies prelim in paper two and an A overall in the final exam so I might be able to offer some insight into how to answer these types of questions.

I always use a formula to answer any kind of source questions and make sure I stick to that. By the time exams came around (and they come around quickly, I promise), I had pretty much memorised the motions and was able to just apply them mostly without thinking.

Firstly, you should be aware of a few things when it comes to Accuracy questions:

For full marks, you must refer to all of the sources

0 marks are given if it isn't clear to the marker that the evidence you have selected is there to prove that the statement is in/accurate (aka make sure to really spell it out for them, act kind of like you're leading them directly to the conclusion you want them to reach instead of expecting them to know)

You're capped at 8 if there is no obvious overall conclusion

You must select source evidence which shows that the statement is accurate and then do the same for inaccurate, you can't just argue one side all the way through

Accurate and inaccurate evidence is given in a 'set'. Each set is worth 3 marks

It's basically a fancy support/oppose which was completed in Nat 5 so I'd recommend 2 different colours of highlighters

Mark Allocation:
8 marks for the use of evidence which shows that the statement is accurate or inaccurate (hopefully, you'll be aiming for 9 marks just to really bank it)
2 marks for an overall judgement on the accuracy of a source

Conclusion (2 Marks):

2 marks are awarded for coming to the correct, nuanced conclusion on the accuracy/inaccuracy of a source

0 marks are given for simply stating that it is accurate or inaccurate. 0 marks are ALSO GIVEN for simply stating that the source is accurate to a "certain extent".
I'd also recommend trying "mostly", "largely" etc to really demonstrate your evaluative knowledge

You basically want to put together all the evidence you've selected to back up your point, in your own words

Steps:

1.

"The statement that ______ is accurate because in Source (_) is states that ______. (ONE MARK)

2.

"This is further supported by Source (_) which shows that _______. (ONE MARK)

3.

"This clearly shows that _____." (ONE MARK - EVALUATIVE COMMENT)
Use words like "significantly", "majority", "adequate" etc, they all signal that you're attempting evaluation rather than more source marks
(3 mark set achieved)

4.

Repeat steps 1-3 again, this time changing it to say that the statement is inaccurate
(3 mark set achieved - total of 6 marks banked)

5.

Do it once more, choosing either accurate or inaccurate
(3 mark set achieved - total of 9 marks banked (only counted for 8 though))

6.

2 marks for your overall judgement which is sophisticated and has sufficient depth (it uses evidence that you've put into your own words)
(2 marks achieved - total of 10 marks banked!!)

Hope this helped!!
