Got an offer from a good uni but parents don't want me to go

I am in year 13 and applied to university of Bristol and LSE. My mother and father want me to go to LSE because it's close to where I live however I got rejected. I have received an offer from Bristol but they completely shut down the idea of me leaving London to got to university and the rest of the unis that I applied to are mediocre compared to Bristol. What should I do?

at the end of the day it’s you who is going to university not them, the decision is yours, but try your best to convince them. Like it could be better for your future or something and that you’ll visit often

Have your parents explained why they won't let you leave London? Is it because they want you to live at home?

Is there a teacher at your school/college that could talk to your parents?

You could always take a gap year and reapply to LSE with achieved grades.

Hey @razax161 , I hope you are doing well. I am sorry, this is a tough position to be in and I really hope I will be able to help. I cannot tell you exactly what to do because the decision is up to you, but I will list the options you have and state the pros and cons. Hopefully this will provide clarity and make your decision easier.

What choices do you realistically have?

1.

Accepting Bristol and go:

Pros

Best academic choice

Independence and growth

No “what if” regret

Cons

Family conflict

Guilt / pressure

This is the option most students in your position ultimately choose and pretty much adjust over time.

Staying in London:
Pros

Less immediate conflict

Parents feel reassured

Cons

Long-term resentment

Feeling “held back”

Regret when comparing opportunities

This often feels easier short-term, harder long-term.

Gap year and reapply:
Only worth considering if:

you genuinely want it

you have a clear plan

you’re confident you can improve your application

It should not be a forced compromise.

I would also encourage sitting down with your parents again, not in a confrontational manner but instead framing it as, "Bristol is a very strong university that gives me the best academic and career outcomes." Tell them things like how Bristol offers independence with structure, you will stay in regular contact, you will visit as much as you can. In my experience, I have learnt that parents sometimes just need time, not immediate agreement.

Lastly, I would just say really reflect on this and make a decision that you know will not lead to regret or resentment long-term. Trust in yourself and do not feel selfish for wanting the best for yourself.

I wish you all the best in your decision-making 🙂
