How Likely am I to be Offered a Place on Bsc Computer Science

Hi there, I'm looking to apply for BSc Computer Science this October but feel it's very unlikely my application would even be considered. Any advice on how I should move forward?

I'm currently in FE and by the end of this academic year, I would have L3 ED in Art and Design, EPQ, GCSE Mathematics - Numeracy, GCSE English Language (C) and GCSE Mathematics (B). For all the qualifications without a grade, I'm predicted A*/Distinction*.

A bit of background: I was homeschooled until the age of 16 where before I had never sat any exams or gained any qualifications. Recently, I've felt like a computer science degree would be better in the long run, especially since I'd like to work in a job that blends design with technology. I have knowledge in the subject and believe I would 100% cope with the course material but I don't have qualifications to prove that.

During the next academic year, I plan to study a L3 Extended Cert in Computing and A-Level Mathematics (though nothing is nailed down). I can stay for another year to earn a L3 ED in Computing, which would meet their requirements, but I feel ready to take on uni and want to move on to the next step.

So my question is, do you think I have a chance at being accepted? I understand Cardiff Uni does contextual offers which may get me to an interview.

Thank you for reading!

Hey there!
I understand your frustration but you may be happy to know that not every University focuses solely on grades/ucas points. If you believe that you are ready for University, it might be the moment to start applying and chatting to the University application teams to see if anything can be done. Some Universities may offer a foundational year to make up for any lack of knowledge and fill in gaps. It's always worth a shot to apply as every opportunity not taken is an opportunity missed. At Staffs, I was taught from the very beginning as if I had no prior experience, which for many students nowadays in computing is reality. Many students change courses or swap to computing!

Please do have a chat/email with any Universities you are aiming to apply for where possible to get a clearer image. If that fails, clearing also exists!

Hope that helps,
Aura (Comp Sci, Uni of Staffs)

Good afternoon,

The University of Reading assesses every application on an individual merit basis, ensuring that every student's application is considered; this is the contextual offers scheme. However, this does not mean that every student receives an offer from the university.

There are Computer Science degree courses at the University of Reading that you may like.

The University of Reading offers an ambassador scheme, allowing prospective students to connect with current students. You can find more information here. They will be able to provide you with an insider's perspective on the degree and answer any questions you may have about the course.

All the best,
Ella
