How to apply to university as a (soon to be) 20 year old?

Good afternoon to everyone,
I am looking to apply to university after having taken a 2 year break,
Working, saving up, taking on other responsibilities for the household etc.
I now want to apply to university through UCAS, I am ready to begin my studies.
Where do I even begin? I finished my A-Levels in 2024, I told my teachers how I wanted to take a gap year or two, to earn money and work.
The problem I see with the application is it requires a referee, most people do it from their school I guess... Could I assume that my school still has information on file about me, and I can contact them for help?
If my old school cannot help me, what other options do I have to complete my application?

Thanks for your help

The first thing you should do is contact your school and explain your situation, because they might be able to help and maybe write your reference.

I reapplied to university this year after going to uni for a year last year (having also done A-levels in 2024), and was in conversation with my school even though they didn't end up writing my reference.

Thankyou very much for this reply. I'll be contacting my school ASAP. If you don't mind me asking, since your school did refuse to write your reference, what alternative did you opt for?

I had an academic reference from my uni last year so didn't need one from my school, but they are more local to me so were useful for interview prep.

Are you planning to apply for 2026 entry? If so, the equal consideration deadline is 14th January at 18.00.

Hi,

I agree that contacting your school is definitely the first step, as they might be able to provide a reference. But if they can’t, it doesn’t stop you applying, employers or other supervisors are valid referees. UCAS just needs someone who can vouch for your skills and readiness.

Universities often offer applicant support teams to review applications or give advice. Visiting an open day helped me hugely, when I visited Teesside University, talking to someone from the course put a lot of my application worries at ease.

Extra tip (if you’re starting your personal statement), Explain why you want to study now and highlight what you’ve done during your break, work, responsibilities, and skills like organisation, teamwork, and communication. Being an older applicant can actually be a strength.

I took a similar path, as I spent a couple of years after college working and saving before starting uni. Applying after a break can feel confusing or daunting, but being older and having work experience is actually an advantage.

Taking time out before uni doesn’t put you behind, it gives you perspective, motivation, and experience that many younger applicants don’t have.

Good luck! 😊
