The Student Room Group

GYG (resit edition)

I'm techinically a y14 (embarassing), had a tough sixthform experience but alas we move on. I'm currently resitting all my alevels from home and alone which has been interesting so far.

first set of alevel results: CCD
predicted are the same as what I was predicted last year: A*AA
subjects: english lit, bio and chem

I have set myself mocks for the end of this month/start of Feb to motivate me going through all the content and filling any knowledge gaps I had in y13.

I'm also working part time 2 days a week but I don't know if I should quit and focus on Alevels or not.

I'm aiming to do 5 hrs a day as if I was at school again but currently im doing 8 hrs one day and 1 hr the next.

struggling to balance everything without getting burnt out.

Diagnosed with ADHD and ASD last August so still trying to navigate that despite having lived with it for my entire life.

THE GOOD NEWS, however is I have 3 offers at the moment, and I am waiting to hear from UCL

Birmingham human sciences (AAB)
Durham health and human sciences (AAB)
Bristol neuroscience (ABB)

Thinking about getting a tutor after mocks perchance.

things to know about me:
I love michael jackson
I love steven universe and adventure time
I love angry women music
I hate the political state of the world and that is my only motivation

Hi there!

Please don't be embarrassed about resitting, you need to do what is best for you

I'm autistic and probably have ADHD (trying to get a diagnosis currently, but not really getting anywhere at the moment). I was diagnosed with ASD when I was 16, so if you have any questions please feel free to ask me.

I wish you all the best with your studies and look forward to following blog

update!!

not doing enough work. I keep getting distracted by political affairs essentially, I cannot stop thinking about whats happening in the world. Sometimes things feel very futile but I know that education is the biggest weapon against fascism so thats motivating I guess.
I'm thinking of getting a tutor for either english or bio because I'm not sure how to mark my own essays.

positives
I've been listening to a really good dystopia / utopia podcast whenever I have time (taking bus, going on a walk etc) and its actually been really usefull for english and thinking about the genre. Its called "utopian and dystopian fictions". They bring in prominent scholars/academics in Dystopia to discuss various topics surrounding the genre. It has actually been really informative and interesting/

I have been enjoying my subjects a lot more now that I'm studying in the comfort of my home but I've been really struggling with actually "starting" if that makes sense.

I am realising even more so my attention defecit problems lol. sitting still and not thinking about many things is difficult. I wish I was medicated but I won't be until 1st year uni.

Still waiting to hear from UCL about human sciences. It's apparenty a niche course because I can't see anyone talk about it anywhere in terms of receiving offers.

Does anyone have any tips about getting through the massive amount of bio content quicker because each topic - even the easy ones - are just taking me too long and my mocks are in a week and I don't think I'm going to be able to get through everything in time.

Hi!
Thank you for the reminder that resitting isn't embarrassing lol Everything happens for a reason and I know this is the step I needed to take.

In terms of ASD, I know it affects everyone differently, but I was just wondering if you have any advice for focusing on your work when youre hyperfixated on something else. When it's bad for me, it feels like chewing my own arm trying to do literally anything else but what I'm hyperfixated on

Hi! Do you think its worth it making notes for chemistry ? or should I stick to flashcard and past paper questions?

I think the best thing for me is a physical change of environment to help me get out of that headspace whether that be go to the library or go for a walk or to the gym to clear my head.

Right so for me Im a visual notes kinda girl so i found it helpful to make colour coded mind maps to connect concepts together but i would definitely say to make sure you do exam practice!!)

21/1/26

I had work today. 2-10pm shift. Last week is my last week so after that I can focus completely on studying thankfully (and learning how to drive lol)

I tried to wake up early and study before work but I ended up sleeping in and did and hour of Bio b4 work. I did some flashcards and also went over some more of cells.

I got absolutely drenched waiting for the bus to work omg I was so cold ☹️

stressing a bit about getting the grades I need. I had a meeting with an english tutor and he seemed very nice so I think I might do biweekly sessions so that I can have someone mark my essays and give me feedback.

Going to try do some more work, although it will probably just some learning and not active recall because I'm tired, before I go to bed.

I listened to Michael Jackson my entire 8 hour shift and helped a dad whose son had a sore throat because I worked in a pharmacy for 2 years lol.

I always forget that my experience doesn't just go away after I stop experiencing the experience.

I still want to get better at art.

I am in a similar position to you (resit). And I have applied for Durham & Bristol. I was wondering what ur GCSEs were.

off the top of my head i think they were 999877776
6 in english language because it was my first exam and i freaked the freak out during it lol
i do have contextual reason as to why i didnt do aswell as i shouldve so i have actually received contextual offers from ucl and bristol though
i also did overcompensate by burning myself out in year 12 - i was head student, chief editor of the school newspaper, volunteered at a care home, worked at a pharmacy during sixthform, worked for neurox ypag which is a young person advisory group for neuroscience and mental health research, i did about 5 work experience placements (was originally applying for medicine haha and then i changed my mind)
so that might have a factor in why i have received 4 offers now lol

I GOT A UCL OFFER OMGGGG - dream course but I don't know how im going to handle london prices which is really frustrating.

ABB contextual which im surprised i got but im not complaining haha

i might have burnt out a bit
