Open Days

My daughter, has a long list of potential unis all over the country-concerned it is going to be impossible to fit visiting them all in. Is Year 11 too early? Thought if can get a few out of the way that would help and if she really likes the feel of them can go back closer to application time. Have any of you started in year 11? Don’t want her to feel out of place and be put off somewhere due to being younger that other visitors.

How long is this list and what subject is it for?

I would say that it is very early on and things might change, and it can get quite expensive as well as time consuming. At all of the open days I have been to, the prospective students tend to stick with their parents and don't really mix with anyone else so I wouldn't worry about that.

There are often online events as well which you can go to get a feel for a uni, while not having to visit them which might be a better thing to do at this stage.

Will look into online. She wants to do physics and has been looking at up north at Durham and Manchester, then a London one and a couple of random ones

Hi,
It is brilliant that she has a list already and open days are a wonderful experience. Personally, she needs to focus on her studies and should only be attend open days that she is capable of going to and realistically sees herself putting as her top options for UCAS. Megabus and flixbus are also really good affordable travel options for this. Mark out the open days and prioritise which ones she truly wants to check out, many offer virtual ones or "3D tours" that you can access on their websites though they miss the "talk to current students and lecturers" aspect. Many Unis also have their own online chats, forums, servers and more for students interested where she can join and chat to current students.

In terms of age, for open days this really does not matter as long as she is accompanies by an adult if under 18. The policy depends per University so check up on this prior. Most students on open days do not really talk to each other and stick with their parents or friends they came with from my experience, it can often be a case of shyness or safety bubble though it is lovely to see when future students do mingle. There are entire welcome weeks for it when they do join! At open days you'll see entire families, friendship groups, siblings, mature students and more so fitting in isn't much of a worry. The experiences are made to be touristic, hands-on and guided.

Overall, have her list out her top choices and prioritise those as burnout is real! Tell her to keep up the spirit though, great thing to have.

Hope that helps,
Aura (Uni of Staffs)
