Thinking of Product Design at loughborough? Super stressed about location and course

im not 100 percent sure which course i want to do but ive kind of settled on product design as i am a creative person but its also a safer option because its more technical. For a levels, im doing art, maths, graphics, and English at a level.

Ive heard that the Loughborough course for product design is the best option, but im concerned about the place of Loughborough because 1) im not THAT sporty and the idea of a uni being super sports focused is a bit eehhh… and 2) the town looks DEAD and i would prefer a place where im not bored. I really want a friend group and places to go and things to do, which is why im also looking at Leeds.

I also like a nice bit of nature, is there nice walks / forestry around Loughborough ? I like to clear my head.

If anyone else has any suggestions about where to go instead of Loughborough or Leeds or just any general input in my queries about Loughborough i would appreciate it SO MUCH. (Or even any other ideas for different courses instead of product design. I’m just lost in general tbh.) My UCAs is due in like less than a week and I haven’t solidified my uni choices.

Hi,

I responded to a similar query last year, and most of the concerns you have regarding the nightlife are addressed in there. I suggest you have a read of it.

As for the sports thingy, although sports is (obviously) a big deal at "Lufbra", it's not the be-all and end-all. TBH, you mainly notice the sports vibe on Wednesdays, and occasionally Saturdays... on most of the other days, Loughborough feels like any other University (apart from the abundance of the infamous purple tracksuits lol). There are several students there who, like yourself, have little to no interest in sports, so I'm sure you'll find like-minded individuals with endeavour. At the end of Freshers week, they have the Freshers Bazar, where all the different clubs and societies have stalls to attract new recruits. Check out the link below, and see if there's anything in there that you'd like to explore further.

Societies List - Loughborough Students' Union

As for walks, Loughborough is surrounded by parks, farms, fields and forests.... in fact, it's part of The National Forest, so lots of opportunities to go for walks, hikes etc. if that's your thing. To get you started, the most famous walk (favoured by students) is Beacon Hill, which is also close (walking distance) to the University.

P.S. For the evenings, as well as the standard generic party songs, there are certain songs which work particularly well with a Loughborough crowd. If you DO decide on Loughborough, it may be an idea to familiarise yourself with them beforehand. They include (but not limited to):-

1) Spandau Ballet- Gold
2) Tina Turner- Simply the best
3) Kanye West- Gold digger
4) Queen- We are the Champions
5) The Proclaimers- 500 miles
6) Jim Johnson- I'm always here (The Baywatch theme)

(I think you can spot a theme here lol).

Good luck in your choice, I'm sure you'll make the right decision. If you have any other questions, just ask, and either myself or someone else will get back to you.

1) You'll be fine. No pressure to do sports and you really don't need to be sporty to thrive here.
2) Loughborough is a town. There's no denying that. If you do get bored, Leicester and Notts are only a few mins away by train (10 mins for Leicester and a few more mins for Notts).

Yes there's lots of nice walks. On campus we have Burleigh Wood and OSF (if he doesn't mind me referring to him as that 🤣) has also rightly talked about Beacon Hill.

Only correction is that Stupid Tuesdays is not a thing anymore. There's Incognito instead (which runs every so often on Thursdays) and does grime, drill, hip‑hop, rap, trap, R&B, reggaeton etc.

@mesub lol, it's OK... I used to DJ at LSU when I was there... so I've been called a lot worse than that 🤣🤪😁
