First lab report

I got a 63% for my first lab report in one of my modules. Is it decent? Feel like could have done better.

Only you can decide if it's a decent grade you're happy with. It's a 2:1 though, so it's not bad. Lab reports in particular are tricky though, so for a first one I personally think that's alright. It's worth looking over the feedback though to do better on your next lab report!

Hi @anira5647. You should give yourself more credit! For your first lab report that is amazing! you should be proud of yourself. The percentage you achieved is above average! So do not put yourself down. If you would like higher then ask your module tutor for feedback on how to achieve a higher grade. I hope this helped!

Hey,

63% is genuinely a great mark, especially for a first lab report. It is a 2:1, which is a strong and very respectable grade. A lot of people don’t hit the 60s on their first piece of coursework because there’s always a bit of adjustment to what uni marking is like, how reports are structured, what the markers want, etc. So, getting 63% first time round is a good sign that you’re already on the right track.

It’s also totally normal to feel like you could’ve done better, most people do. The really important thing now is to look at the feedback. That’s basically a checklist for how to push this kind of report into the high 60s or 70s next time. One thing to keep in mind is that early coursework is as much about learning the style and expectations as it is about the content. Your marks usually creep up as you get more used to what your lecturer wants.

If you’re feeling unsure or want to improve, it’s a really good idea to talk to your lecturer or your personal tutor and go through the feedback with them. They can usually explain exactly what was holding it back from a higher mark and what to focus on next time.

Good luck 😊

Hi there,

63% for a first lab report is great, well done! The step up to university assignments is always a huge leap for everyone, so the fact you're already achieving 2:1 grades is amazing!

I'd definitely take a look at what feedback you've received for it, to know how to get even higher grades next time. If you really want to go above and beyond, book a meeting with the module leader and go through your report to get more detailed, individual feedback and advice for next time.

As well, if your university has an academic success/achievement team, I'd recommend checking out what they can offer before you submit future assignments. At LJMU, our academic success team can help with essay and report writing and structure, as well as things like statistics. They can't help with assignment content of course, but they can help you improve your academic writing, so they're a really great (and usually under-used by students) resource that might be beneficial to you!

I know this advice is for improving for next time, but that doesn't mean you didn't smash it this time around. Just keep doing what you're doing and good luck for future assignments!
