Should be okay. If there's any truly technical work that you'd need to do, then you can use your PC when you get back to your dorm (or the uni lab computers).

That will definitely be sufficient, the only time it may pose an issue is if you want to frequently do coursework at cafes, libraries or even if you take holiday leave and go back home, a Chromebook most likely won't be able to handle coding or larger data sets, but if you are going to do majority of that type of work from your dorm you'll be fine, just use Chromebook for note taking/ essay works

Hello, I'm Aura, a Computer Science student in my final year at University of Staffordshire. I was in the same boat as you not too long ago as I did not own a proper laptop nor PC until I came to University. Here's some things to consider. PCs are brilliant for working at home in your own comfort and time, though when you are University or commuting in consider the following:

1.

Note taking and commuting.
Are you happy taking notes by hand in lectures? A Chromebook should be perfectly fine for note taking but for anything else, it might struggle. It is also a hassle to connect to the University internet sometimes! If you want to use a laptop for any other purpose, consider investing in one. If you often like studying or doing work in Cafe's or social spaces, a laptop is a must. I must admit my life got a lot easier when I got one as I could take it out and work anywhere, including on the train.

2.

Portability.
If you often like studying or doing work in Cafe's or social spaces, a laptop is a must. I must admit my life got a lot easier when I got one as I could take it out and work anywhere, including on the train. If you store all your work on the Uni drives (cloud based and recommended), you can do work from anywhere really!

3.

University labs.
Do all the labs have the software you need? Sometimes you have to take additional measures sadly to speed things up. With a laptop you can download your own files, software and extensions you may not have admin access for in Uni labs. If you are fine with using what is already there, then don't worry, otherwise you can customise a lot more on your own device... including practicing without worrying that something might go wrong (context: cyber is fun 🙂)

In my opinion a laptop is worth it and has improved my productivity. It is not a requirement but can help you greatly! Please look into any bursaries or scholarships for your chosen University to see if they can support you in getting one, or apply for internal inclusion plans, which may be able to provide you with one. Hope that helps!

Aura, Uni of Staffs rep.
