Applied for engineering with foundation year but gcses are low

I applied for university of sheffield general engineering with foundation and I don't do A level maths so I need 3 BBB. That's fine as I'm predicted ABB (life and health sciences and business studies). However, gcse requirements are maths 7/A and my gcse maths is a C* which is 2 grades lower. I accidently didn't check the gcse requirements because majority of the time it requires at least C. How will this affect my chances? Its foundation so it won't be a popular course

Typically GCSE requirements are a non negotiable, the exception to this is of you do the subject at A-level and the A-level score can supersede the GCSE, without this I would anticipate a rejection.

I wish you luck and hopefully they have more flexibility but id advise managing your expectations, and looking at alternative options whilst you wait to hear back.

Hello,

Is this your only university choice? I definitely recommend applying to other universities (check their entry requirements section) in case it doesn’t work out😊

Hi bejenaru, 👋

It's great to hear you have applied for general engineering at Sheffield. My partner did his engineering degree here and absolutley loved it!

In terms of grade requirements, I would recommend getting in touch with the prospective students team just so you can get a bit of clarity over this. In both mine and my partner's experience, we have found Sheffield to be quite lenient on grades when you choose them as your firm choice. But yeah, I would say to drop them a line and explain the situation, just so you can get a bit more clarity.

You can call +44 114 222 8030 between Monday and Friday, 10am to 12 noon and 2 to 4pm UK time. Or complete the online enquiry form, or open up the chat bubble in the webpage to start a conversation here.

I hope this helps. Do let me know if you have anymore questions and I'd be more than happy to help.

All best wishes,
Phoebe 😀

Firm on A-levels or GCSEs? It is standard practice to reduce A-level requirements if the course is not full, this is not the same with GCSEs.

Hi, I applied to Sheffield for this same course for 2026 entry with a 6 in maths and unfortunately got a rejection. I also didn't check the requirements haha 😭
