Foundation years at uni

If you apply to a foundation year as a safety but your predicted grades meet the standard entry requirements will they just give you an alternative offer to the standard course

(Specifically SOAS)

Hi there,

Happy New Year, and I hope you're doing well. I just talked to someone from the admissions team. You have two routes you can go down:

A) Apply for the foundation year, and when results day comes by, you can then call up SOAS to adjust your offer to your chosen direct course
B) Apply now for your Year 1 direct entry course, and if by chance you don't meet the offer on results day, then SOAS will offer the foundation course as an alternative

If you've already applied, then wait to hear from SOAS and then proceed from there, but they'll go off of what course you applied for at the moment, from my understanding. All the best and good luck.

Kind regards 😊

If one fails to meet their offer by one or two grades, or does not meet it strictly (e.g. achieving A*BC instead of BBB), is SOAS prepared to be flexible and allow them onto the course, or would it typically result in a rejection?

How likely is it that they will give the foundation alternative if you miss the standard offer by a few grades instead of rejection

Hi there,

On results day, the admissions department will review your grades and application again holistically and can based on their criteria being fulfilled, offer you direct entry for your chosen course. Or they'll offer you the foundation year; upon completion, you can then do the degree you set out to study from the start. Either option can happen if you find yourself in this predicament, but hopefully, all will go well.

All the best and good luck! 😊

Hi there,

The admissions department will review your grades and application again holistically and can based on their criteria being fulfilled, offer you direct entry for your chosen course. Or they'll offer you the foundation year, subject to you fulfilling the minimum requirements for the foundation year. You will then be able to go on to study your degree choice. You will most likely not receive a rejection unless your results fall short of even the foundation year requirements. I hope you won't find yourself in this predicament, and all goes well!

All the best and good luck! 😊
