DSA review of study needs

I had my initial assessment last academic year but due to new needs I am having them reviewed this week.

I was provided with a DSA laptop however I really dislike the laptop and hardly use it due to poor battery life, loud fan due to overheating and being bulky to transport to and from uni.

I am wondering if I will be able to get a different laptop, I know this means I may have to pay again and more than the standard £200 to get a model that will work better for me but that is somthing I am happy to do.

I am having to use my Ipad in lectures which is working okay but not ideal due to not being insured and not having all of thesoftware that my laptop has.

Has anyone had a similar experience/ knows if I can get a different lapotop?

Hi Aelw,

I know the feeling, my super clunky DSA laptop gets on my nerves sometimes! Luckily I only have a few months of my course left so I'm just gonna stick it out.

In this instance it would probably be best to bring it up during your next assessment - if your needs include utilising specific software, you can explain how the computer is making it super difficult to get to and from class so you're not able to utilise your software like you're supposed to. Maybe write a list of all the things that are wrong with it, and ask if a trade-in is possible. The most likely option I see is they will give you the details of the supplier to contact and explain your situation. They could replace it, or ask you to send it back to them to fix, or you might have to pay for a new one, it can depend on what is wrong with it (if there actually is anything wrong, maybe it's just crap to start with!). They'll know best - I'm sure they get this all the time. Worst case if you do have to pay for another one, emphasise that you don't want the same model again! And if you do pay more it might be worth checking if your uni will help you pay for it.

Best of luck!

It’s highly unlikely your funding body will agree to a new laptop.

Many of the note taking apps will work in a browser (like glean/genuo) have your tried logging in on your iPad?

You are right, they said as the laptop is working, it is fine. I also asked if I purchase a new one, can the insurance be transferred, but that was a no too. Lesson learned: do more research before choosing new laptops. I am able to use genio and gramerly on the Ipad but not other software, as a result of the review they have also recomended 4 more bits of software so will now look into a laptop that suits me better.

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, this is not the outcome I was hoping for, and I will need to find and fund a new laptop myself, which is fine as long as I pick one that can run all the necessary software and meets the criteria of what I am looking for.
