Reapplying and modules

Hi, due to circumstances I'm likely going to have to leave 1st year. If I reapply for the same course at the same uni, will I be able to retake completed modules? 1 essay = 100% of a module, which I didn't do well on due to external family responsibilities. Or no? Thank you.

Hi Anon,

Sorry to hear that you're facing some bad circumstances ☹️ I find that this will vary uni to uni - I'm not aware of any standardized way of tackling this type of thing. The best person to contact would be your course admin and ask if you restarted would you be able to resit previously completed modules. I find many uni staff are sympathetic to students and they should be able to give you a clear, tailored answer without any issues. If you email your course admin, they will be able to answer the question themselves, or refer you to someone who would know the answer (possibly admissions department). All it takes is asking if you drop out and restart, can you take the modules again - you don't have to elaborate on your personal circumstances if you don't want to. Your circumstances, if they were previously unstated to the university, may be able to influence the decision in your favour if you want to resit (if it comes to that) as some unis have policies about being able to resit if you were suffering certain personal circumstances, even if you didn't fail and were just unhappy with your grade.

Best of luck with everything :yep:

Hi there,

I am sorry that you must be going through something difficult, and I hope things start to improve for you soon.

I think the best people to talk to about this would be your uni. They will know the ins and outs of how it works at the uni you go to, and whether they would require you to redo the modules or not. If you speak to the help team, or see if you can speak to your academic advisor about this as they should be able to talk you through how this works at your uni. As you have extenuating circumstances, there may be different ways that this is approached too.

I would imagine that if you are reapplying and starting in first year again, you would redo all of the assignments that you have already done. But as you have done them this could also be seen as unfair so I'm not sure how this would work. See if you can talk to your tutors about this as they will know better.

I hope some of this helps,

Lucy - SHU student ambassador.
