Ethics approval for dissertation

Hi, so it is now January. I was told by my supervisor to aim to submit my ethics application before Christmas and I have not. I am starting to stress a lot as my deadline for my dissertation is in April. Am I starting way too late or do I have some time?

Hi @anonymous #1

It should not be too late to start however it is important that you start working on it and submit it as soon as possible! If you are able to, then it would be good to prioritise the ethics approval because once you have that you will be able to properly work on your dissertation. I would recommend contacting your supervisor to let them know how you are getting on and to see if they are able to offer you any additional support.

It might be helpful for you to make a plan of when you are going to complete each part of your dissertation by, ideally that gives you time to spare prior to the final deadline. This should help you to plan your time and make sure that you are able to get everything finished in time so that you can submit something that you are happy with.

Hope that helps!

Depends on your uni - at my uni you would be too late now, but I gather my uni is particularly strict with ethics. Still, get it done ASAP and get in touch with your supervisor to check you're still in the clear.

Hey,

Ideally, ethics would be done before Christmas, but January is still very normal for a lot of students to be sorting this out, especially if their project involves participants, surveys, interviews, or data collection.

The main thing to understand is that the ethics process itself can take time. Some applications get approved quickly, others come back with revisions, and that can add a couple of weeks (or more). So, the risk isn’t that you’re late in general, it’s that any delay from this point eats into your data collection and writing time. So no, you’re not starting way too late, but you are at the point where you can’t afford to keep putting it off.

A few practical tips:

Prioritise the ethics form this week if you can. Even a rough first version is better than waiting for it to be perfect.

Email your supervisor and be honest. Something simple like: “I’m working on the ethics application now and plan to submit it by X date, can I send you a draft to check?” They’d much rather know now than later.

While you’re waiting for ethics approval, you can still be productive: write your intro, literature review, and methods chapter. A lot of that doesn’t depend on having the data yet.

People finish dissertations starting later than this, but the ones who do are usually very focused and organised from this point on. You still have time, if you start pushing the ethics application forward now, April is still completely achievable.

Good luck 😊

Hi there,
Just in case, you may want to look into applying for an extension or mitigating circumstances if possible.
You are still a few months away from the final deadline in April so I believe you still have time! It is never to early to start writing.
If you are really stuck, I would suggest highlighting your difficulties in writing to your tutor, they might be able to point you in the right direction and offer some guidance 😁
I like to write in bullet points just to keep my ideas flowing and to help me start!
I hope this helps and I wish you the best of luck!
