Cambridge MPhil English Applicants 2026

Hi everyone, I just wanted to make a thread for those applying to the MPhil in English Studies for 2026 entry. I’d love to connect with you all and keep each other updated on our application statuses! Would also be very interested to hear what areas people want to research in

Hi! I chose postcolonial literature as my area of research! I applied in October for the US funding deadline and haven't heard back yet for admissions. Is this normal?

iirc, that just means u haven't got the Gates and so you've been 'rolled over' to the rest of admissions w everyone else in Jan. I think this is right - there's deff something about this on the main mphil website : ) gl !

I chose Renaissance and criticism and culture!

hey  I indicated 4 different areas (postcolonial, 20thC-contemporary, criticism and culture, Philosophy). What kind of things are people most interested in about the course? Any particular research frameworks/specialist seminars, etc.; for me it’s the opportunity to focus on literature and philosophy.

Any other reasons for applying? 🙂 I’m not sure whether I’ll be accepted because there didn’t seem to be many faculty members who have the right interests to supervise the project I proposed, but will find out I suppose. If you want to share how you’re feeling about your application as a whole then pls do!

Same, it seems like there is only one person that could supervise mine, although I did propose an interdisciplinary research topic so I’m kind of nervous about that being a disconnect from their interests

to Anon and @Nahaha -- i wouldn't worry too much about that. I'm an undergrad @ cam and while I'm sure UG and PG disses are v different, at UG level cam is v v open to u being supervised by someone who only specialises in *a bit* of ur research area. In some cases, I've known UGs to have 1/4 of their hours with another diss supervisor who can "check the rest" so to speak. Cam puts quite a big emphasis on having you go at it alone (hence only 4 hours of supervision for UG disses, and 6, i believe, for MPhil ones) .

tldr; as long as the area seems sensible + interesting, its novelty will be FAR from a disadvantage : ) after all, the point is for u to contribute NEW research ! x

I’m also interested in literature and philosophy! The bodies and performance seminar also sounds fascinating as it links in well with my proposed topic. I’m not sure how I’m feeling about my application overall - I think my proposal was relatively strong and it seems to align well with current research in the department, especially one academic whom I indicated as a potential supervisor - but I’m worried I won’t have the same research experience as other candidates as I haven’t been able to do any internships. Staying positive though!

Hi Everybody!

I believe I also indicated 20th Century, Contemporary, and Criticism and Culture. My proposal, while genuinely related to my areas of interest, was entirely news to me as I was writing it and probably reads that way lol. I keep getting waves of cringe/embarrassment when remembering what I wrote down, but I think thats typical when you're putting yourself out there. If I'm not successful in my applications this year I may give Cambridge another go next year with a more refined idea.

Genuinely wishing you all the absolute best of luck. I'm just happy so many people care about literature and want to study it

How do we tell? : )

I’m not expecting to hear anything until March (not sure whether people here have also applied to the other place, but they give themselves until 8-10 weeks after the January 7th deadline). If anything comes sooner then that will be a surprise to me! Wishing everyone good luck.

Good luck to all of you! I am a current English MPhil student and this thread popped up, so I just wanted to pop in and say that last year people moved straight from “submitted” to “decision pending” and skipped the “under review” stage. It seems only some departments have “under review.” As you’ll see if you scroll through previous years threads, “decision pending,” is generally a good thing and people rarely get rejected after getting put on that status (in previous years at least). People who are rejected tend to move from “submitted” right to “application unsuccessful” (or a status name like that). Last year, I think people started moving to decision pending throughout February.

It’s great! Very well run seminars and lots of research assistance. I’d say everyone I’ve talked to seems to be getting a lot out of it. You’ve picked well by applying to this course.

Heya! Also did my MPhil at Cam and moving forward with my PhD this year (not decided where). If anyone has any questions I’m happy to help! Saw the thread pop up so thought why not.
