Predicted grades lower than uni requirement - How realistic are these choices?

Hi, I currently have these as my predicteds:

A in Biology
B in Chemistry,
but have a C in Maths

and want to apply to Biomedical Sciences at Southampton, Sussex, Exeter, Aberdeen, and Essex as my choices. How realistic is this?

I'm aware that for Exeter the requirements say, "Grade A and Grade B in two science subjects, one of which must be Biology required."
Sussex says, "Must include B in Biology."
Essex reqs are BBB-BBC (my safety)
Aberdeen says BBB
And Southampton is my dream/first choice, so it makes sense to have it, as it's one grade higher than my predicted.
I'm also considering Plymouth? I'd love to get an opinion on which of these are the most realistic as I'm sending off my application soon.

I have the required GCSE grades; I just need to be sure of whether there's a shot at this, and I'm trying to apply as strategically as possible.

Hi @naeehha👋

Hope you are well. Thank you for considering us! You are correct, that is our grade requirements for your subject. However, I wanted to let you know that if you get lower grades than what we expect, we can still make you an offer and let you in based on contextual offers and sometimes offer foundation years or alternative courses so that you still have a chance for us so do not worry too much! Aim to get your predicted grades but remember you still have options if you do not!

Hi @username7514282 👋

I’m currently studying biochemistry at the university of Essex and I’m really enjoying it!

I also took biology, chemistry and maths and I dropped a grade for one of the subjects and still got a place as Essex. This was because Essex also take UCAS points into account so just wanted to give you some piece of mind with someone who has got accepted even though my predicted weren’t exactly correct 😀

Hope this helps

Essex is a solid choice, the rest are aspirational. Id recommend having one choice a bit lower if possible or having a back-up plan of going through clearing

I have my bio offer from aberdeen, I wouldn't worry. I had low grades n am resitting a subject. I'm widening access tho so if you are then that might help. idk if you went to the aberdeen open day but it seemed amazing, considering it as my top choice above uni of edinburgh x

Hi @username7514282 ,

I think it should, hopefully, be quite likely that you receive an offer from Southampton. For context, personally, I got those exact grades for those exact subjects, and recieved an offer from the University of Southampton through Clearing on results day in 2024, so I feel like you should have a high chance, despite being one grade lower than the entry requirements.

I hope that this was helpful and that you get offers from all of the universities you apply to!

I’m seeing a mix of IBMS and non-IBMS accredited degrees. Do you know the significance of the IBMS accreditation when studying BMS?

I’m a trainee BMS in clinical biochemistry and asking as I’ve seen a lot of people want to work in a hospital but choose a non-IBMS degree and then learn they can’t after graduation.

Trying to avoid you learning that the hard way! 🙂
