Durham Uni Accommodation Help!!

So naturally I’ve started stressing about uni accommodation for 2026-27. I’m in Durham. But everywhere I look seems to have contracts for 51 weeks and no other option - that’s insane??? No student is going to realistically want a 51 week contract - even international students would likely be going home in the summer.

Does anyone have any idea or advice for finding 39-45 week contracts for studio/en-suite accommodation (in Durham!)??

Wow, didn't know this! Unless you can commute from the private student let companies in Newcastle I've no idea.
My sistrr is in Newcastle, much cheaper

This is a concern as have offer. I cannot afford full year rental after 1st year. Is there no term time Uni accommodation that is cheaper than commercial rentals? Thks

I’m afraid this is the norm at most university’s. You will struggle to find anything different.

If you think about it the other way, the landlord isn’t going to want gaps in rent, nor will you want to move all of your belongings out for them to rent the room out every time you go home.
It’s industry norm unless you get into uni halls.
It’s a pain I know but it’s just how it is. A bit like you don’t get a break from your mortgage payments every time you choose to go on holiday.

Also, accommodation wise. Just a heads up that most students secure their next years accommodation in the second term. Ready for next academic year. Especially in Durham where there is a shortage of student lets. If you leave it too late you’ll be left further out of town and won’t get any choice of area etc that you’d rather be.

Hello!

Unfortunately most landlords rent accommodation like this in Durham (and most of the UK unfortuantely!) Colleges generally offer 40 week contracts but as far as I know that's about it.

Hope this helps!
