I’m afraid this is the norm at most university’s. You will struggle to find anything different.
If you think about it the other way, the landlord isn’t going to want gaps in rent, nor will you want to move all of your belongings out for them to rent the room out every time you go home.
It’s industry norm unless you get into uni halls.
It’s a pain I know but it’s just how it is. A bit like you don’t get a break from your mortgage payments every time you choose to go on holiday.
Also, accommodation wise. Just a heads up that most students secure their next years accommodation in the second term. Ready for next academic year. Especially in Durham where there is a shortage of student lets. If you leave it too late you’ll be left further out of town and won’t get any choice of area etc that you’d rather be.
