Advice for my son on next steps

Hi,
My son is taking his A levels in Maths, Physics and Chemistry this summer but doesn’t really know what to do next, he has been home schooled since he was 13 so the prospect of uni doesn’t appeal to him.
I think a further education college would be ideal but I am struggling to find what HND’s or DipHE’s are available and where they are taught.
Any help on this would be appreciated.
Thanks

If university doesn’t appeal, HNDs and DipHEs are a good alternative and are mostly taught at further education colleges and university centres rather than traditional universities. They are level 5 qualifications, usually two years full time, and can lead straight into employment or be topped up later to a full degree if he changes his mind. You can find what’s available and where via the UCAS course search by filtering the qualification to HND or DipHE, which will show local FE colleges as well as providers across the UK.individual college websites are also worth checking. Given his A levels in maths, physics and chemistry, courses in engineering, applied science, computing or technology. Best of luck!
He could always carry on being home educated, or get a job.

Not sure why being home educated *per se* means someone wouldn't want to go to university (especially if they did want to go to FE college) (To go by those HE people I know)

Is what you are actually saying that he doesn't feel ready to leave home and there's no suitable university close enough to commute? Or are you saying that he wants to do something practical?

I suspect he might find himself extremely frustrated by FE if he's already done A levels. (But going to open days would be a good idea... ditto maybe some university open days... one of mine, definitely not considered university material, took him to an open day almost more as something to do than anything else... he's an undergrad there now... and he was EOTAS at the time as a young adult) Depending on the reasons he's been home educated (and 13 is a flag that it wasn't a choice bourne out of pure principle) the support for him and the environment might be more of a problem than a university would be.

An apprenticeship might be good if he's wanting to get into work. Or sometimes it takes a few years of work to demonstrate the value of university (or not) It could be that he'd benefit from some travel or residential volunteering.

Loads of options. I would say there's no rush but there are some complications around FE funding.
