Work Experience in yr10

So apparently there’s this thing called work experience that a bunch of schools offer, where you can do things related to jobs and careers, which you can stick on your cv or whatever, and helps with working towards an actual full time job in the future. Anyone know if this is available externally? I don’t know if my school does it, since they’ve ‘advertised’ careers talks, but nothing about work experience. Mainly just alumni coming in to talk about university and job application experiences and stuff. Bear in mind I am going to ask the person that runs all this stuff at my school, but just in case, anyone got any ideas?

My school did work experience in year 10. Everyone had to organise somewhere (with the help of the school). And it was a set week where people did work experience. Everyone did it.
Might be worth asking your school.
If your school doesnt do it then it may be worth seeing if you can volunteer somewhere or something, to get experience.

When I was at school we had this scheme in year 10 where we did work experience for 2 weeks during term time. Work experience absolutely can be done externally though, even if your school doesn’t formally organise it.

1. Ask your school first (which you’re already planning to do!)
Many schools don’t advertise work experience clearly, or they focus more on careers talks. Sometimes they do allow work experience, but only if students arrange it themselves. It’s good to check with the person in charge just in case there’s a process you need to follow.

2. External work experience options
Even if your school doesn’t offer anything, you can look for placements on your own. Popular routes include:
Local businesses
Shops, offices, charities, libraries, community centres. Many are open to taking students for a week or two. I did mine at a charity and i know they're always looking for help.
Bigger companies
Some large organisations run structured work experience programmes for Year 10–12 students. Examples (depending on your interests) include:

Banks

Law firms

Tech companies

Councils or government departments

Healthcare providers

Many of these programmes can be applied to online.

Virtual work experience
Over the last few years, loads of companies now offer virtual work experience, which you can complete from home. It still counts on a CV.
Examples include programmes on:

Springpod

Forage

3. How to find placements yourself
You can try:

Emailing local businesses directly

Checking websites of companies you’re interested in

Using online platforms for student work experience

Asking family or friends if their workplaces accept students

4. Consider short or informal experience
Things like:

volunteering

shadowing someone for a day

You’re already doing the right thing by asking early and exploring your options. Even if your school doesn’t run a formal programme, there are loads of external ways to get experience.

I hope that helps,
