Nursing Pre-registration

Dear Student Finance England Team,

I would like to request clarification regarding eligibility for student finance for a second undergraduate degree.

I am considering applying for a pre-registration Mental Health Nursing undergraduate course in England (leading to NMC registration).

I already hold an overseas Bachelor’s degree in Adult Nursing, which was completed outside the UK and was not funded by UK public funds or Student Finance England. I am not currently registered with the NMC.

I understand that pre-registration Nursing courses are classed as ELQ-exempt, and I would like to confirm whether, under current regulations, I would be eligible for tuition fee and maintenance support from Student Finance England for a Mental Health Nursing degree in England.

Could you please confirm whether holding an overseas nursing qualification (not UK-funded) affects eligibility for student finance for an ELQ-exempt pre-registration Nursing course?

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi there,

Can you confirm when the course would start, what university would you attend and how long does the course last?

Thanks, Drew

Hi Drew,

Thank you for your response.

I understand that final eligibility decisions depend on a submitted application. However, I am seeking confirmation of the general eligibility rules, rather than a case-specific decision at this stage.

Could you please confirm whether, under current Student Finance England regulations, a pre-registration undergraduate Nursing course (ELQ-exempt), undertaken in England, is in principle eligible for tuition fee and maintenance support where the applicant holds an overseas nursing degree that was not funded by UK public funds and is not NMC registered?

This clarification would help me make an informed decision before submitting applications.

Yes, that's correct - Nursing courses are exceptions so you'll be entitled to the Tuition Fee and Maintenance Loans, plus any supplementary grants that you're entitled to.

So long as you're not registered to practice as a nurse in the UK then your previous qualification won't be taken into accout.

Thanks, Graeme
