What is a pdt (personal development tutor) at uni really for?

I’m a first year in uni and I’m not really sure what a pdt is really for? Does anyone know?

It's essentially your named contact if you need any help or advice during your degree. You might not need this person at all during your degree (I haven't, at any rate), but since they are in many places the ones that will write your reference for jobs and things, it might be worth being friendly with them and replying to them if they reach out to check up you're alright, just so that it's not a total stranger writing your job references at the end of your degree!

Hiya, although it can differ for each faculty, your Personal Development/ Academic Tutor is there for you whenever you need additional academic support and can signpost you to the relevant student support services (eg. wellfare, careers, administration...) if needed 😊.
There should usually be a check up session with your personal tutor during each semester where you can voice your opinions or simply ask for advice! I hope this helps.

Hi,

Your personal tutor is there to support you with your academic progress, personal development, and any issues affecting your studies. They can be part of the teaching team, but their role as a personal tutor is to offer guidance and advice. They’re usually your first line of support and can signpost you to the right services, whether that’s academic help, mental health support, or career guidance.

Hope this helps,

Hey,

A pdt is like your main contact at university for support and guidance (usually outside your course content). They usually check how you’re doing overall, help if a personal matter affects your studies, and guides you to the right services your uni offers (if you need extra help).

You usually meet them a few times a year, but you can always reach out to them if you’re unsure of who to talk to.

Hi @Anonymous🖐️

They are your first mode of contact essentially. They will check in on how you are doing and give you advice on your decisions and help you. If you want to talk to anyone about anything, it is always good to go to them as they are the ones who are allocated to be there for you. For example, talking about your course and any problems, they will tell you what to do and help you do that as well.
