university of glasgow- Scot’s Law

hi,

ive applied to glasgow to study law, i sent my application at the very end of october and still haven't heard anything back.

unfortunately due to pretty intense circumstances i only ended up taking 3 highers in S5. in which I got AAB. i am contextual due to being a young carer and having some extenuating circumstances affecting me this year which was mentioned by my referee, also have updated glasgow since and they have responded saying my application has been further flagged.

this year i am sitting 3 more highers, in predicted AAB again. I also got 23 in the LNAT (jindal method.)

do i actually have any chance at getting in? like i don't want to set my heart on glasgow if it isn't likely ill actually receive an offer.

Hey, I've also applied to Glasgow! To be honest (and I'm definitely not the best person to ask considering I'm not even at uni yet) I'd say it's a 50/50. Your application is good but it genuinely comes down to things that aren't really in your control now.

Glasgow specifically tend not to get back to applicant until mid-march at the earliest so I wouldn't be expecting an offer for a while (frustrating I know!!). This is because their course is highly competitive so they have a lot of applications to sort through.

In terms of LNAT, I know people that have got into Glasgow with 23+ (23 usually being the cut off) but this depends on what Glasgow set as their average for the year and the general average across the globe. So for instance, if the global average was 19 this year, 23 seems more impressive. On the other hand, if the average was 24 this year, it may mean you are slightly disadvantaged.

In my personal opinion, from the research I have seen your grades might be the only thing holding you back. The LNAT is enough to obtain an offer usually and being contextual is a plus because the uni needs to give a certain number of contextual offers per year. I think for your application, it will come down to what courses you are taking in S6, what these predicted grades are and whether you are able to complete something such as the REACH programme or Sutton Summer School.

It's so hard to tell because Glasgow give out offers based on such random criteria - sometimes it is down to luck. But don't worry about it too much because you have done the best you can and that's all you can do for now!

I really really hope you get your offer but worst case there are 4 other uni choices - all of which are great for Law if you are applying to Scotland. It genuinely does not matter where you get your Law degree from, you will be capable of thriving at any uni. I know you have your heart set on getting into Glasgow but remember if you have applied to Strathclyde or Glasgow Caledonian University then you can still benefit from living in Glasgow as a city. I think a lot of people are keen on Glasgow, not necessarily because of the uni itself but the social aspect and Glasgow as a good city in general for students.

Hopefully this gives you a peace of mind and of course, this is merely my subjective opinion so take it with a pinch of salt. I completely understand how stressful the wait is but the best thing I find helpful is to think 'what is done is done' - there's nothing more you can do now but the important thing is you tried, and you tried your best.

Rooting for you!

Thank you so much for replying!!! I
I’ve seen you post a little when I’ve been lurking lmao. I’m from Edi so obvs staying in Scotland, and I just love Glasgow as a city. Unfortunately I was rejected from strath because it was full which has kind of dulled my spirit a bit but we keep going. I didn’t apply to cali stupidly, having regrets now tho.

I’m doing H RMPS, H Modern Studies and H Business this year. I’ve just had a really bad time at school and just can’t wait to get out.

It’s so annoying they take so long to get back too, some of my friends have heard back from other subjects and I never realised they took so long for Law. The anticipation is too much, especially as im so uncertain about how much I actually contend.

Best of luck to you too

Hi there,

Great to hear you're interested in studying here at Glasgow!

We cannot guarantee an offer just by meeting the requirements, however, applicants who do will have a strong chance of entry on to the programme. As we are a competitive institution, we advise all students to ensure they’ve read and understood our requirements and meet all mandatory subjects.
Full information on our admissions policy can be found here - https://www.gla.ac.uk/undergraduate/entryrequirements/guidance/#

As someone else mentioned, our offer deadline isn't for a few months, so I wouldn't worry about not having heard anything yet. It can be a super nerve wracking time, but try your best to just focus on doing your best in your upcoming exams!

All the best for your offer and exams, and if you have any admissions related questions you can submit an enquiry here.

u should have a really good chance at an offer based on usual contextual offer making! the only problem u might have is not doing any advanced highers but depending on how high ur application is scored contextually it might not be a problem

hi there, thank u so much for responding. im super scared because i know other contextual people who have received law offers but I haven’t :frown: im a young carer for reference, i was advised not to take any AH’s due to my situation and it likely not really being manageable for me. i emailed the young carer point of contacts a few months ago where they told me that they needed a letter from a carers center, my carers center have since sent it so i emailed them again asking if they have received it and they haven’t responded - they’re probably annoyed because im kinda spamming them lol. do you know if Glasgow weigh LNAT section B at all?

they only just started making contextual offers at the endish of last year so i wouldn’t worry if yours hasn’t come through yet! some contextual applications also don’t hear until the normal deadlines it can just depend on how the application is flagged, also if they haven’t replied to ur email it probably means they haven’t even read ur application yet so don’t worry at all! glasgow historically never consider LNAT section B or even read it at all, they only focus on multiple choice and ur score is well above the normal cut off of 19/20 so ur LNAT stands u in really good stead! also a lot of people get rejected from strath and get into glasgow so dont let it tear ur confidence 🫶

Hey! I’ve applied for Scots law at UofG this year as well and have pretty similar circumstances to you! I sat 4 highers in s5 instead of 5 (also due to intense circumstances) and I’m also a young carer. I’ve yet to hear anything from Glasgow as well.

Probably a silly question but When you said your application has been further flagged what does this mean?

Wishing you all the best of luck and hope to see u there in September🤞❤️

flags are given to an application based on different qualities, for example you get one flag per characteristic, i.e you get one flag if you are a young carer, another flag if you live in a SIMD20 postcode, another flag if your school is low progression etc. She just means she has got more then one flag on her application.

You too! It says on their website: https://www.gla.ac.uk/study/wp/adjustedoffers/
that we should be “GUARANTEED” offers I think because we’re carers? so im not totally pessimistic, I just don’t know if i 100% believe it. have you heard of anyone hearing back? I just wish i took more highers like everyone else last year.

Thank you so much for sharing that! Ik me too, I just keep telling myself that I had taken more I probably wouldn’t have got as good results as I ended up with. A girl in my year has widening access due to her postcode and she got a conditional offer at the start of December. I believe her conditions were a pass of the lnat and the reach programme. She did 5 highers but I don’t think it was all A’s, I think some B’s and C’s. I’ve got an unconditional from Aberdeen but got rejected from strath which I was gutted with (and was shocked due to being predicted to leave school with 8A’s and have a lot of work experience). But I’ve not heard of anyone else that’s had an offer from Glasgow for law x

Maybe carers are done in a different batch, im not sure! It was the same for me with Strath, it definitely knocked my confidence. Let me know when you get your offer, hopefully soon.

It says on the conditional offer for Glasgow uni Scots law from UCAS to upload your Lnat scores..how do we do that..or do we even have to as I thought the uni already had them! Does anyone know? 🙏🏻
