readjusting to uni life after taking a break

Hi everyone, this is a question for those who took a gap year before going to uni or just anyone who went back to uni after not being in school for a while. How did you find your transition from your gaop year into uni life. One thing i am worried about is having to redjust to school life and because of this, falling behind everyone else. I am currently on my second gap year and going to uni this year and I'm pretty sure i've forgotten how to even start an essay. Also, if anyone took a gap year and then went to kcl specifically, how are kings with supporting students like you who have taken a gap? But yeah, any advice would be appreciated (even just general uni advice as well), and I would like to hear from you guys experiences. Thank you to whoever responds to this  !

Hi there! I currently study biomedical science at London Metropolitan University and in my second year.
I took a gap year between sixth form and university to work full time and earn some money while trying to decide what I wanted to do; I understand that it can be incredibly daunting to suddenly shift back into education after a break. Thankfully, I think that it was a pretty good transition period - from my experience, anyway.

First year starts with a lot of introductory lectures and the first few sessions were pretty much refreshers on how to structure your assignments and how to reference; things I already knew but appreciated the reminder. My lecturers and head of department were more than happy to answer any questions and there are other resources like the student union which you can reach out to if you need more guidance.
Ultimately, everyone else in that room is in their first year too whether they took a gap year or not, so they're hearing all of this information for the first time just like you. I'm sure you'll be able to connect with others!!

I hope this could help. Good luck with your studies!!

I took a gap year, I didn't find it too difficult to go back to university. You get eased into things, and first year was not as intense as sixth form or being employed. At least in my experience.

So, I wouldn't worry too much, I'd just read a little bit about your subject so you're not too rusty and have a bit of an idea of what you'll be covering. But other than that, I'd just try to enjoy the rest of your gap year. Good luck with uni

Thank you for all this information, this really helps!! I’m glad to know that I’ll get a lot of introductory lectures to ease me in and refreshers as well, I kind of thought it was going to be like A-levels where I just got thrown into it.

Hi there!

I'm Jacob, a second year Film & Media student at Anglia Ruskin University! Similarly to yourself, I took two gap years before beginning my university studies, working full time in the meantime. At first it seemed like a very daunting transition, however in reality it ended up going very smoothly. As others have stated, many of your first lectures in university will be introductory, outlining the contents of each module and how to structure your work to submit for assignments. Don't forget that the university structure is new to everyone in the room, not just you, one of the many joys of first year! We even had mid-term refresher sessions on how to structure an essay and how to reference properly which I found very useful!

Don't be afraid to speak out either, if you do see yourself falling behind, lecturers will always be happy to help, no one in university wants to see you fail 🙂 If speaking up in class seems too daunting, I'm sure your tutors will be more than happy to answer any questions you have over E-mail, some of mine were kind enough to look over small sections of my essays and provide feedback or have a short chat on Microsoft Teams, even in my second year. Everyone is here to help, so don't be afraid to ask for it!

Hope this helps! Best of luck with your future studies!
