What do I ask at forensic science course at uni open days?

I am currently a year 12 student doing drama, biology and criminology.
I have my first open day at Anglia Ruskin but I have no idea what questions to ask.
Any suggestions would be great and any current or ex students at any university doing forensic science please give any tips or tricks about your course and experience looking for a job afterwards

Thanks x

When you're at an open day, I would start with generic questions about the course, accommodation and student life to get a feel for the university. There will be student ambassadors and members of staff to help guide you and answer any questions. If there are any talks or course specific sessions, I would recommend that you attend them so that you can think of any specific questions about certain modules and course structure.

Hi there,

Here are some questions I'd recommend asking at the open day if it hasn't already passed!

Course info

Which forensic disciplines are covered on the course (you can usually find this out by looking at modules), for example digital forensics, toxicology, entomology, chemistry, anthropology, crime scene investigation...

How much of the course is theory vs practical work

Are there many optional modules to choose from, or is it mostly core subjects

Will you get to use/be trained on specialist equipment in labs

How big are the class sizes - do you have shared modules with other courses - are practical groups smaller than the full class size

How will you be assessed - is it mostly assessed practicals, exams, coursework or a mixture of them all

How many hours a week are usually timetabled for teaching vs independent work

Support and employability

Is there much academic support available

What support services can you access as a student

Do you get given info on employability in forensics - e.g. any forensic careers and employability lectures, careers fairs...

Are there any opportunities for placements/internships

Is the course accredited (most accredited forensics courses will be accredited by the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences, definitely check them out!)

If there are any student ambassadors around, I'd also recommend chatting to them and getting their personal experiences of the course, as well as the uni itself - they're happy to answer questions! Ask about accommodations, societies, what there is to do in the local area to get a better feel for the locations as well

Hope this helped a little!

Good afternoon,

I recommend reviewing the course page, modules, assessments, and accommodation options, and noting anything you may need or want further clarification on.

For example:
What types of exams and assignments are there?
How many exams will there be per module?
How many modules do you need to do per year?
What are the optional modules?
What are the best and worst accommodation options?
What are the best societies?

If you think of questions after you have visited the universities, there may be unibuddy ambassadors who you can talk to online. The University of Reading offers an ambassador scheme, allowing prospective students to connect with current students. You can find more information here. They will be able to provide you with an insider's perspective on the degree and answer any questions you may have about the course

All the best,

You dont need to ask any questions - just listen. If you are going with a parent, ask them to takes notes during any course presentation so that you can just listen. Take photos and stick them in a separate folder foreach Uni -its easy to get them mixed up and forget what each one looks like.
