Maths is a must, and FM is highly recommended if you can take it. Otherwise, it doesn't really matter. Do an essay based subject as well though for good variety.

Hi everyone! I’m starting Grade 13 this year and will be studying A-Level Maths, Physics, and Chemistry. I’ve already completed all my AS Level content, and in 2026 I’ll be moving on to the A2 syllabus, with my final exams expected around October–November 2026. My aim is to achieve high grades (A’s or possibly A*), and I’m really motivated to stay consistent from the beginning. I’m looking for advice on how to build a strong and effective study or revision timetable, as well as any proven techniques, tips, or strategies that actually work for long-term learning and exam success. I’ve also heard about retrospective and spaced-revision timetables and would love to know if they’re effective and how to use them properly. Any guidance or examples would be greatly appreciated!

Hi @adamtajdeen 👋

Every university differs in regards to what A-Levels they require for their course.

At the University of Essex our UK entry requirements are:

GCSE: Mathematics C/4

A Levels: BBB-BBC

💭 A good piece of advice is to research into specific universities entry requirements 💭

I hope this helps. If you have anymore questions, please free feel to ask! 😊

Maths isn’t a must and FM is definitely not required nor particularly preferred.

Strictly speaking, you are correct. Particular institutions have their own preferences though, look at LSE as an example.

There are a relatively small number of universities in England which require A level maths. I think that the proportion may be higher in Scotland. However most universities don't - including the Flying Start degree courses which are probably the most competitive.

Hi @adamtajdeen,

Dr Mayowa Akinbote here (Senior Lecturer in Accounting and Finance at University of Staffordshire).

As mentioned in the thread, different universities have different requirements, so it is worth doing your research.

Once you start however, usually universities assume no prior knowledge of business or accounting, and everything is taught from the ground up. Mathematical ability helps with confidence, but accounting relies much more on logical thinking and understanding processes than on advanced mathematics.

Additionally, you do not always need A-levels to study Accounting and Finance, which often comes as a pleasant surprise to students. If you do not meet the standard entry requirements, the University of Staffordshire offers the option to begin at Foundation level and progress through to the full degree. This provides a clear and supportive pathway from entry-level study to graduation.

Let me know if you have any questions or if I can help at all.

I applied for this course for 2026 entry and I'm doing Maths, Economics and Geography at A-Level. As long as you have a variety in your subject combination with maths in there then you have the freedom to decide. However, some unis would prefer a humanity/essay subject or FM so do your research.
