If I get a C on my dissertation can I still get a 2:1 from uni

It'll probably all turn out fine, and everyone thinks I'm smart so of course I'll get a first, and I'm probably overthinking... but my honours project is not going well. I'm trying to fix it but the harsh truth is I'm just not good at my dissertation topic. I've really tried, but I just suck.

I'm a science student for context. Wet lab project, a bunch of things went wrong and its knocked my confidence. My dissertation makes up 25% of my grade this year.

Can I still get a 2:1 or 1st if my project gets a C? If I work really really hard in my exams to make up for it?

No-one can tell you without knowing your previous marks, your degree regulations, including what a C represents etc.

I guess my question would be, has anyone here got a 2:1 or 1st with a rubbish dissertation?

Yes, me! My undergraduate dissertation was my worst mark by quite a margin. (I made up for it at postgraduate!)

Hi there @Sparklygreentea , I am so sorry to hear about how your dissertation is going. Instead of thinking of the worst case scenario, are you able to speak to your academic tutor for additional support before the deadline? Or apply for an extension to salvage it?

Hi @Sparklygreentea

I'm sorry to hear your project didn't go as expected! However you could definitely turn things around and get a better final grade. I recommend talking with your tutor to work out together what grades you would need in your other assignments to achieve a first or 2:1. This way you know exactly what you are aiming for.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,

Thank you 💜 did you still finish with an undergrad classification you were happy with? Or did you need the masters to get the jobs you wanted?

Thank you, fair point, I hadn't thought about talking with my course leads but I'll do that this week! My course leads are nice, they should be supportive

Yes, my undergraduate dissertation was a mid 2.2 and I finished with a high 2.1. My master's was necessary for my chosen profession at the time. My dissertation from that was 90+ and an article based on it was published.
