University Choices

I am only a Year 12 pupil, but I am currently focusing on my A-Levels as on my mock I have achieved ABB on my first mock, however I just wanted to consider some choices for universities in the future for law, and see if my options below are a good

Manchester LLB Law with Politics (aspirational/contextual reach)
Lancaster LLB Law (access-supported target Lancaster Access Programme)
Edge Hill University LLB Law with Politics (target)
University of Lancashire– LLB Law with Criminology (target)
University of Huddersfield LLB Law (insurance)

I tend to apply to one russell group universities than loads, what do you guys think.. as I am inspiring to be a Family Solicitor.

Heyy @jackky1,

It’s great that you’re already thinking ahead about your Law options and ABB are solid mock grades! I’m currently a third year LLB Law student at Lancaster University so hopefully I can give you some insight into what it’s like.

Lancaster is a really strong option for Law, even if it isn’t Russell Group. It’s actually ranked high against many RG universities, and the Law School is well-regarded for teaching quality, research, and student support. You mentioned you’re aspiring to become a Family Solicitor, while I didn’t take that module myself, several of my friends did and highly recommended it, they found the content really engaging and also did very well in their assessments.

A key part of the Law School experience is the Law Society. If you haven’t looked into Law Societies at other Unis, I’d really recommend it, they’re a main point of contact outside of lecturers and academic advisors and can have a huge impact on your student experience. Lancaster’s Law Society is very active and offers a ton of opportunities. They run mooting competitions, including the chance to compete internationally in events like the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna. They also organise networking events with top law firms, we’ve had workshops and visits from Clifford Chance, Allen & Overy, Addleshaw Goddard, and more. On top of that, they run academic workshops, guidance on training contracts, application processes, and other career-focused advice.

Since you’re planning on being part of the Lancaster Access Programme, you’ll also benefit from additional support and possibly a lower contextual offer. This takes a lot of pressure off and can make Lancaster a very comfortable and achievable target option.

While I haven’t been able to go into too much detail, I hope this gives you a good overall picture of what studying LLB Law at Lancaster could be like. If you have any more questions at all, feel free to reach out~

Hi @jackky1,

It's great to hear that you are thinking to apply to study with us. Well done on your mock results! 🙂

I haven't studied this course but here's some more information about the degree. Preston is the second largest city in the UK for conducting trials, second only to London. Examples include the Cregan, Bulger, and Shipman trials. You can visit the courts and go behind the scenes. You will be taught by leading academics and by staff who are professionally qualified and research active. We've been providing innovative legal education for over half a century.

Option modules in both law and criminology allow you to hone in on areas of interest relevant to your future career aspirations. An optional module in Year 3 means you can spend a period in law related work placements. You can find more details like lecturers and their contact details if you have any questions, explore the court room and much more here.

If you do have any questions feel free to ask or get in touch with our course enquirers team via Contact us
Best wishes,
^Zac

Hi @jackky1 ,

That’s great to hear you’re already thinking about university options and that you’re considering Edge Hill. Congratulations on your mock grades, you should be in a strong position to apply for LLB Law programmes.

Edge Hill offers lots of opportunities for all students but also law student in particular. There is a dedicated moot court room which has been taken from a real court room and placed in the university. This is a perfect space to practice mooting with other students as part of modules but also outside of class time. Also, we have a very active Law Society which engage in lots of competitions and there is also a law clinic where students practice offering legal advice. These are great ways to improve your skills as a Law and Politics student outside of taught content.

As a student, you will be provided with a personal tutor who you can go to for any academic or personal support. There are also office hours for all of the lectures so you can ask about any content or assignments you feel like you might need extra support with.

If you want to find out more about what it is like to study Law at Edge Hill or you have any specific questions you can always chat to one of our current Law students Chat with our students: Annabel.
