Hi everyone, my name is Kingsley and I'm a current PhD Student in Evolutionary Biology at the University of Exeter's Penryn Campus. I also studied in Penryn for my Masters by Research degree and for my undergraduate degree in BSc Zoology with Study Abroad, which was spent in Austin, Texas. In total I've been at the campus for almost 10 years now - it's been such a good time that I haven't wanted to leave yet!

I've got lots of experience and knowledge about life on campus, different accommodation options, sports clubs and societies, the best beaches, bars and restaurants in town, and everything else regarding student life in Cornwall. Please feel free to ask any questions you have about our Penryn Campus and I'll try my best to help answer them.

Hi Kingsley! I am a postgrad applicant (MSc Conservation and Biodiversity) and I was just wondering what is private accommodation like (How easy is it to find somewhere, is it affordable etc) and how easy is it to meet new people as a postgrad.

Thanks

Hi there!

Great to hear about your interest in the MSc Conservation and Biodiversity course. The Centre for Ecology and Conservation is truly an amazing department, and a lot of my friends have graduated from that course!

Private accommodation is generally quite easy to find in both Falmouth and Penryn. There are a few popular groups on social media sites like Facebook which you can use for finding accommodation, housemates, or a combination of both, as well as the usual sites such as Right Move and Spare Room. Lots of my friends on the MSc Conservation and Biodiversity course ended up in shared houses with fellow course mates and other MSc students which was nice to be living with flatmates at a similar stage of life experience. If you're an international student, there is also the option of staying in our university halls of residence. Otherwise, there's a range of private accommodation in Falmouth, Penryn and the surrounding area - from smaller shared cottages and flats to larger shared townhouses. The available housing covers a range of different budgets too - if you want the amazing sea view every morning then you might have to pay a little extra for it!

It's also really easy to meet fellow postgrads, both on the same course, within the Centre for Ecology and Conservation, and across other departments too as part of the wider Graduate School community. The structure of the course is designed to facilitate lots of social interaction, including plenty of seminars, field trips and field courses that will often require group work or presentations. Outside of the course, there are lots of sports clubs and societies which are all open to postgrads - I'm a member of a few such as Marine Watch, even as a PhD student. There are also some postgrad specific groups such as a Postgrad Board Game Group that you'd be welcome to group - I'm also in this and partial to a game of Wingspan or two! Generally both campus and the surrounding area of Falmouth and Penryn is a pretty close knit and inclusive community, which makes it easy to meet like-minded people.

I hope that's helpful, but please get in touch if you have any further questions.
