Funding Eligibility for Temporary Absence due to PhD studies

Hi, I have a question I was hoping I could get an answer to. I have lived in London for 7 years (my family home is still there) but I will be in Scotland for 1-2 years for an MPhil/PhD before going back home to London, and hopefully starting Graduate Entry Medicine. Would I be elegible for funding as my 'home' address according to university records is still in England? (the PhD is temporary). Or would the fact that I have been living in Scotland for my PhD studies prevent me from getting a loan?
Thanks!

Hi thefootballgeek,

You always apply through wherever you call home and not where you are living for the purpose of study. If you are normally resident in England and are only in Scotland for study purposes, your domicile would be England and therefore you would apply through SFE.

Thanks, Clare

Hi Clare,

Thank you so much for your answer.
I understand this, but my main worry is how SFE will assess that I did not move to Scotland permanently and if there is a minimum amount of time I would need to spend in England per year during the PhD. And also how SFE would assess that I am not moving back to England only for studying purposes, and if my PhD would be classed as studying or employment.

Thank you again.

Hi there, we base the application on the domicile you would normally class as home (England), so this will be who you apply through. As to if it will impact your application or support that you are only studying in Scotland and will be returning back home to England after your studies are complete, this will have no impact on your support. Students from England can study in any domicile within the UK and still received support as their residency is their home nation, just because you have to temporarily reside (for the purposes of study for the period of your course) in another domicile will not impact your eligibility for support to be made available. (Your studies are not classed as employment) so we would treat your application as if you were still studying at an English university, rather than one in another domicile. Stephen
