Computer Science Degrees at Uni

I'm in Y11 and currently thinking about future careers, and computer science is really interesting to me. I'm familiar with the basics, but clueless about how to develop my skills ( + don't have much time for taking an online course, though if needed I could try to find some). So I'm wondering- do university computer science courses start from the basics, and are they easy to follow? Would I have to have amazing coding skills to actually succeed? And finally, is the workload punishing? Thanks for any advice!

Hiya! I'm in my final year for my computer science degree at bath and i can assure you that uni cs courses will start from basics. Quite a few ppl on my course had little/no coding experience before so a lot of the lectures at the start of the first year are geared towards going over the basics so they arent left out, additionally my uni held extra sessions ran by 2nd/3rd year students to help first years in a more casual setting (can't guarantee all unis do this but i assume most of them will have smth similar). The workload i think really depends on the uni and your work ethics but i do think in general cs has a lot of work, especially coursework. Also, you don't need crazy coding skills, mine are pretty average and I've managed to do well so far!

Hey Olivia!
My experience at the Uni of Staffs has been a highly positive one. Due to the fact that many students come from all over the country, different courses, different backgrounds it assumes no knowledge to start. You will be taught to program, core theory, developed by practicals and many more things that are catered towards the current industry. The Tech Gold accreditation and BCS really say it all! I have earned certifications studying at Staffs that I knew nothing about prior.

Your first year builds on basics. Second specialises and third further builds on this. Any course that does not do this, should not be an undergraduate degree! Most Universities suggest study hours for their courses too, independent learning and reading materials which can support further. If you have no background in tech and want to excel in the industry, perhaps Staffs might be perfect for you!

When choosing your course, regardless of where you decide to go please read the module descriptors to ensure that they do not require prior knowledge and align with your interests.

Hope that helps,
Aura (Uni of Staffs)
