How important are your option GCSEs?

I’m currently doing my GCSEs and I am hoping to get into UCL for med in the future- however, my art gcse is going quite badly and I’m not sure if I’m going to pass. I’m taking 11 GCSEs ( with a 9 in Polish already done) and I’m predicted a 6+ for majority of them. Will a failed art GCSE seriously harm my chances of getting into UCL medicine? Thank you for your time:smile:

i feel like if generally you're getting at 7s and aboves for everything else and ideally 8/9s in your core subjects and sciences, a bad grade in art shouldnt matter too much. i know med schools are quite focussed on gcses compared to other uni courses, and one as competitive as ucl would be as well, but i do think that as long as your other grades are strong, you shouldnt have to worry 🙂 the better your grades, the better your chances after all, but dont stress about art too much 🙂

Unis don't care what specific GCSE subjects you do beyond the compulsory ones, and just look at your grads if at all anyway.

Also for the case of UCL medicine specifically, they don't score GCSEs at all and just require minimum grades in English language and maths.

Really doesn't matter what you choose, just how well you do (strongly recommend triple science and dropping art)

Hi,
A failed Art GCSE on its own is very unlikely to seriously harm your chances of getting into UCL. GCSEs like Maths and English may be required GCSEs that would effect your ability to study medicine.

Given how much time art takes, I would strongly consider stopping all work on the art GCSE and see if you can withdraw from exam. If too late for withdraw I expect would be best to spend zero time on it and get an upgraded.

The time is better spend on the other GCSEs.

Ucl only care about maths and English, and they only check that you have a 6 by the time of application, the rest they dont care about
