Hey @feebea , I hope you are doing great. Honestly, as someone who has stayed in accommodation for the three years of Uni, I totally understand this dilemma. So I really hope this will be helpful!

What private halls actually are:
I would honestly describe these as student-specific apartment buildings that are not owned by the University but they are made for students.

You are unlikely to end up living with second/third years unless you specifically choose mixed-year options. So I would definitely say most first years are also first years especially in the first semester.

And quick tip to meet them would be to attend the events hosted by your accommodation! That is how I made my friends.

Differences between private halls and uni halls:

In my experience, private halls felt more adult and more modern. But remember this all depends on the accommodation you choose.

Uni halls tend to have more of a social life but again, private halls still tend to run events. So you may have to put in extra effort with private halls but it is absolutely not impossible.

As you already know, the cost!

But honestly, I will just say with this, it is more about what you make of your situation. But I can assure you, you will meet people and eventually absolutely settle in. It is all about what works best for you. I hope this helped 🙂
