What uni is best for science/ pharmacy ?

Im in yr 11 right now, I want to do pharmacy but I'm unable to decide which uni I should be thinking about applying to, for people who have done/ are doing pharmacy or a science degree which unis did you apply to and why ? And do you think the uni u got into is good in terms of social life and studying pharmacy at this uni ?

Thank you
Hi there 😊

I'm a current pharmacy student at the University of Bath.

You're in a great position to know what you want to do and have time to decide where you would like to go.

For myself when deciding which university to go to, there are many factors that can play into your decisions.
Find aspects that are important to yourself like - campus vs city universities, social life, city life, community, things to do, location, cost of living, job prospects, living in London etc.
Then, there is the course aspect and what modules are covered - like some universities have different focus despite it being the same course (pharmacy is a little different in which there is content that has to be taught but for other sciences it can be more flexible)
Then you have to look at entry requirements and what GCSE and A-levels you might need in order to do the course.

There's always the university rankings but I wouldn't focus on that too much as the other things mentioned above. If you get the opportunity to visit the university, then definitely have a look and ask questions to the current students.

One reason I chose Bath was because I liked it was a campus university so a good balance of work life balance between the city. I also liked the way pharmacy is taught and early exposures of placements which was important for me to put my learning into real life practice.

I hope this helps and feel free to ask any other questions!

These are kind of two different questions as to what is "good" for pharmacy vs for science. For pharmacy the nature of it is that since any accredited degree is going to be viewed equally by employers, and the content is largely going to be the same due to the professional requirements, it's going to boil down to quite granular issues about e.g. student satisfaction, perceived (rather than actual) teaching quality, and uni facilities/co-curricular offerings - all of which are quite variable and indeed can vary between cohorts (e.g. a well liked lecturer renowned for good teaching retires, or stops teaching a difficult core module and instead teaches an easier unit, some societies/facilities open/close, or there are external factors like building works limiting access/availability of some resources, or strike action, or something else, in a given year).

Of course since you do know that the professional outlook is equivalent between pharmacy courses, you can focus on those more granular issues - but they're probably the kinds of things you really need to attend open days and offer holder days to get a feel for first-hand!
