Biomedical engineering - help on Alevel choices

I want to preferably go to a competitive Russel group uni when im older. I'm currently in Year 11 and ive currently chosen further maths, maths, biology, physics for alevel. Can anyone offer any advice if these subject choices are appropriate. If anyone has any other advice for perhaps tips at my stage to get into a competitive uni or tips for my gcses aswell, it would be much appreciated.

yea your a levels look good for BME - try to do your best in GCSEs obv, lock in now - especially try to get 9s in maths and science related subjects, and also BME is mostly mathematical and physics-y, check your preferred uni websites(not all unis offer BME), and their course structures. You wont usually need all 4 unless u r applying to oxbridge - but neither of them have a specialised BME course, i think you can drop bio a level later on. Just get good at problem solving - important thing - this will be your most helpful/useful skill - do UKMT challenge questions every now and then. Also, just look at career prospects for BME - many employers prefer something like EEE or MechE over this, but do what you are most passionate about - but just consider other engineering couses that i have mentioned. overall dw, you still have a lot of time - you are in right track with those a levels, but the main priority now is nailing those GCSEs

Look at the 'entry requirements' for this subject at several different Uni - both A levels and any essential GCSEs. And btw, there is nothing magic about Russell Group Unis. Its just a bit of fluffy marketing.

Biomedical Engineering MEng | Study | Imperial College London
Biomedical Engineering MEng | Undergraduate study | The University of Sheffield
BEng Hons Biomedical Engineering Program | University of Strathclyde
Biotechnology BSc - University of Birmingham

They look perfect but I would say also you can get into many UNIS with just maths biology and chemistry, yes, you'll be limited slightly but many Russell group unis will also accept this combination (just not Imperial and UCL and a couple of others) but if you're having trouble with the set that this is also ok.

Hey!

It’s great that you’re thinking ahead about your A-level choices, as planning now will help avoid any disappointment later 🙂 From the subjects listed above, you’d meet the A-level entry requirements for Biomedical Engineering at The University of Sheffield (AAB including Maths and a science) - Biomedical Engineering Entry Requirements. Sheffield also offers contextual offers as part of our Access Sheffield policies. I have added a link in case this applies to you: Access Sheffield.

Your subjects are perfect for keeping lots of options open. Things like work experience or relevant extracurriculars can definitely strengthen your application, but they’re not the be-all and end-all; grades and genuine interest matter most.

Biomedical Engineering sounds really interesting! Do you have any career ideas you’re thinking about yet? 😁
