I'm a UK student, and my proposal is on the lit side. They did say I'd been nominated for funding, but might not find out the results of that until the summer

Lots of congratulations!

Do you know if anybody from the MPhil received a funding nomination? I’m curious how many nominations they make for the MPhil in Classics or whether there isn’t such thing as a fixed number of nominations. Anyway, I heard that funding is much harder to secure at master’s level than at PhD (if you’re accepted for a PhD, ofc)

Congratulations! Me too. Please let us know if you find out anything about other fundings, because I don’t know what they mean by securing other fundings. I know that some colleges offer internal scholarships, but I don’t know if there is anything I can do before being assigned to a college
i am not sure, but i believe they mean if you have offers from other universities that are offering you funding. If this is the case, you may be able to use that to try to get some funding! i am sure they would also be happy to help you figure out more if you contact them. congrats on the offer x, truly hope it works out

Yes, I was nominated for funding at the MPhil level.

So regarding the funding issue: My possible supervisor told me about 200 people applied and it was really competitive and he told me since my application ranked really high (but not high enough to be nominated for funding by the faculty), and Cambridge funding works in "mysterious ways" I could still have a chance of securing college funding or central University funding.

How did you find out who your potential supervisor is?

Also, how did you find out your result? Were you contacted by the department or by the PAO? I received an email from the department admissions director and I m not sure whether I should reply to that email or not. He said I should contact him if I have any questions and if I manage to secure some funds from other sources, since “it is sometimes possible to use that fact to leverage other funds.”

I recommend them myself and there aren't many people who do Mycenean studies in Cambridge so there aren't many to choose from

I was contacted by the PAO director of the classics faculty and he is one of my supervisor so I just asked him to clarify what he meant by leveraging other funds

Do you have any idea how many students are there at the MPhil in classics generally?

I believe that only students who have previously established personal contact with faculty have "potential supervisors"-- most MPhil students will find out their supervisor information in the summer. Don't be anxious about it. If you don't know who your potential supervisor is already, it isn't a problem. They'll assign you someone before the term starts.

I have a small dilemma and I was hoping you could help me with some advice: I received the informal offer from the Department Admissions Office, saying that I have been offered a place, but that unfortunately I was not nominated for any funding; however, they said that getting other scholarships might significantly leverage funding I am not currently nominated for. Today I received another official offer from St Andrews, and I have to give them an answer by 31 March. Cambridge is surely my first option and I really want to study there…is there any way in which maybe holding another offer might influence me receiving funding from Cambridge? I have not yet been assigned to a college - I opted for Trinity and Kings. Do I still have a chance to getting into these colleges if I wasn’t nominated for funding? Like I know they are not the same thing, but maybe if my department didn’t consider I was good enough for funding, these colleges will also not choose me…

I realise I asked different questions at once, but I am really stressed out about this…

I think it won’t hurt to email them but it seems unlikely it will change anything, funding nominations have already happened etc and so they probably prioritise getting those nominated funding at this stage

Do you have any insight regarding how many people were selected? Like how many students are generally enrolled for the MPhil/PhD in Classics.

Has anyone gotten their formal offer yet? It has been a while since the informal offers were send out.
