LSE Anthropology and Law 2026

Hello!! Now that the UCAS deadline is over, I thought it would be nice to make a community for those who applied to Anthro and law for 2026 entry!!

(I’m going to repeat the questions from last years’ forum)

Why Anthropology and Law?
How did you get Anthropology and Law in your personal statement?

Hi!! I am an intl student that applied for both llb and anth&law ba! I know that i would only get 1 offer max but i applied for both because of my love towards the school (I was a determined law student but I have to say that I am more attracted to the anth&law course).

I chose anth&law because of:

the "spiritual" reason - I LOVE SOCIAL SCIENCES, and basically the concept of studying humanity and its development deeply interests me, combine with law, which is my original path of choice, anth&law seems to be the perfect course

the realistic reason - it doesn't use the LNAT. My LNAT isn't THAT bad, i averaged around 25 ~ 27 in my practices, yet it still is a factor (rejected by oxford law pre-interview with 4 A* predicted in A-level and 11 A* (8/9) in IGCSE)

I think my personal statement is sort of anth&law leaning because i discussed a lot about how the society impacts law by addressing the ICC and specifically the Tokyo Trials. I also discussed how I am interested in how humanity shaped law, which i HOPE is anth&law leaning.

That is super cool!! I feel very similarly, anthropology incorporates, and speculates on so much, from gender politics to race, religion, and culture and cultural relativism.

I study english lit currently (definitely not my favourite subject) but I really enjoy discussing culture and how literature, in itself, is an expression and reflection of culture.

I actually didn’t do my LNAT, because I found it too stressful but I definitely regret my decision. However if I did my LNAT, I still would’ve chosen anthro and law over straight law I think.

Hey everyone!

Really glad you made this. I wasn’t sure at first whether to apply for LSE Law straight up or do Anthropology and Law, so I just ended up applying to both.

I’m part of the LSE Pathways to Law programme with Sutton Trust, and we had this Anthropology workshop that I found super interesting. After chatting with a few A&L grads, I got even more into the idea of that course.

In my personal statement, I focused on judicial neutrality and how legal decisions are influenced by social backgrounds. I also examined how linguistic misunderstandings can impact the fairness of legal outcomes, using the Santiago Ventura Morales case as a key example. Additionally, I compared Western legal formalism with Middle Eastern legal systems, exploring how cultural values shape judicial reasoning.

I also explored how cultures affects the law/legislative but from the a gender perspective.

Judicial neutrality seems super interesting, especially when judicial activism is considered!!

Where else did you apply?

Wow...A-Levels don't matter afterall and neither GCSEs. Because Oxford shortlisting is primrarily based on the LNAT score ranking.

@thegeek888 No this is not correct either. If you read the Law admissions report which you yourself posted a link to then it explains their process in some detail. Candidates are given an initial ranking based on a combination of contextualised GCSEs and LNAT score. A level predictions matter in that you have to meet the offer conditions (3 As). So GCSEs are taken into account but they are not the only factor and looked at in context of your schooling - as people on here have said repeatedly on every thread about GCSEs.

All of this information is publicised by Oxford. No speculation is needed. You just have to read what they say.

I don’t know much detail about Law admissions. But A-levels don’t matter in that it doesn’t matter whether you do 3 vs 4 A-levels.

Subject selection (for the most part) is also irrelevant for Law. It doesn’t matter that you chose economics over business or that you’re doing a STEM heavy combination vs a humanities heavy one etc.

If it mattered then there would be a clear statement or de facto hint or at the very least several posts on here sharing student experiences on what the relevant universities want after getting an offer.
