Offer holder here! York, Nottingham or Exeter – thoughts?

hey everyone! 😊
I’m a Year 13 student predicted ABB and currently studying Law, Politics & Business A-Levels. I’ve received contextual offers from University of York, University of Nottingham, and University of Exeter to study law and I’d love to hear your honest insight!
I’m particularly interested in:

📌What the course is actually like
Teaching style (seminars/lectures/tutorials)
Workload and assessment
Support from staff

📌 City / student life
Nightlife
Culture & community
Safety

Things to do
📌Employability prospects after graduating
Careers support
Internships / placement opportunities
How well known the degree is

📌 Overall student experience
Would you recommend it?
Best/worst things about the uni and the city?

Specifically looking for opinions on York, Nottingham, and Exeter whether you're currently studying there, have graduated, or visited often!
Would really appreciate any honest advice, tips, or things you wish you knew before you went 💛
Thanks so much! 🙌

You have until May to make this decision. In the meantime you will be invited to offer holder visit days at these Unis so you can have a more critical look around, listen to a detailed course presentation - and ask current students about the social life, graduate careers etc.

Whichever Uni you choose, it isn't going to make any significant difference to your career prospects - they are all good Law Schools, and increasingly Law firms are recruiting Uni-blind. They are far more interested in relevant work-experience/work-placements, what else you did at Uni apart from just your degree, 'interesting person' etc than your 'Uni badge'.

And if you think about it - no-one here has been to all of those Unis, so what you will get is 'my Uni is fab' responses because its the only Uni they have any experience of. And just because one person thinks its 'fab' doesn't mean that you will.

Hi there,

I'd highly recommend going to visit each of the universities on an offer holder day if you can! They'll be coming up in the spring time, usually around March-April. There will be student ambassadors around on the day that you can chat to and ask all the questions you have, and usually subject specific ambassadors so you may be able to speak to a Law student about their personal experiences on the course 🙂

Visiting each uni is a great way to get a feel for the university yourself, and form your own opinions, as well as being able to explore the cities themselves for a bit after the offer holder day has ended (some universities even offer a city bus tour on the day!)

If you can't make it yourself, the next best thing would be to chat to current students of the university. I've found the 'Chat to student' features for York and Exeter, and will pop the links below. I couldn't find one for Notts but I know they have some ambassadors on this platform that may be able to reply to your questions!

York - https://www.york.ac.uk/study/chat/
Exeter - https://www.exeter.ac.uk/study/ask-a-student/

On those platforms, you can pick a student to speak to based on their course - there may be Law students or those on similar courses that you can speak to - if not, then you can still ask people's experiences of the uni in general in terms of facilities, support etc as well as student life, accommodation and what it's like living in the area

Hope this was helpful!

Hi @Jennifer2t7
Congratulations on your offers! Hopefully I can help clear up some of your questions and concerns about York. Something I definitely would recommend is coming along to one of our Post Offer Visit Day. If you've received an offer you should be contacted about booking onto one of these. It's a great opportunity to visit the campus, explore our accommodation and also hear from your potential lecturers.

The Law LLB at York is quite different to the LLBs offered at other universities. We use a problem-based learning approach, where you'll be separated into student law firms. In these student law firms you'll work together to analyse and break down complex legal scenarios. These legal scenarios not only mirror the complicated overlapping nature of real life legal cases, but also allow you to approach these scenarios like real practicing lawyers might. Ultimately, through this approach you'll not only graduate with an in-depth knowledge of the law but also a practical skill set that will set you apart. Here's a video from a current student if you'd like to learn more.

As a recent York graduate, I can confirm York as a city has plenty to offer no matter what you're interested in. There are a selection of bars on campus run by the student union, but also just so so many bars in the city centre. There are also quite a few different clubs that each run their own student nights. Here's a vlog that takes you through some of the different things to do on a night in York. There's also over 200 student-run societies you can join, meaning you should be able to find people with like-minded interests fairly easily. You can explore some of them here.

In regards to careers, York Law School offers a lot to help you get ahead after you graduate. You'll have the opportunity to engage with the Careers and Development Programme which offers a range of events and support services during term-time. I recommend checking out our website for more details, but these opportunities include skills workshops, networking events and even opportunities to gain actual experience working in law firms.
I hope that helps! There should be more info in the links I've provided but I'd also be more than happy to answer any of your more specific questions.

Thanks,
Sam
