PhD and family life balance/affordability questions

Advice needed! Since finishing my Masters (back in 2017), doing a #PhD has always been a thought in the back of my mind. With life/family circumstances, there hasn't been a 'right time' to consider doing one. However I would really appreciate any advice on the following questions.

1. How affordable is a doing a #PhD with mortgage, childcare, family life?
2. Do PhD time commitments realistically work with family life?
3. Can you switch between full-time and part-time during a PhD, if you start one way or the other (to do alongside another job)?
4. Is it acceptable to do a UK #PhD mostly/fully remotely to avoid relocating?
5. Can you live in the UK and complete a PhD for a foreign university remotely (I see the living allowance in other countries can sometimes be more than in the UK)? Thank you for any responses!
