I need help on getting into a good apprenticeship thats not just some dumb call centr

Im not sure whether i want to go uni anymore, the dept and stress does not make it very appealing, so im thinking about an apprenticeship. I really dont know much about apprenticeships except that they are competitive but i would like one where i can get a degree to go into further work. Not 100 percent sure if what i wanna do yet, most like software engineering. Any advice??
P.s im in year 12, studying maths, physics and computer science alevels.

Hey!

Firstly, it’s completely normal to reconsider your options in Year 12. A lot of students feel unsure about university, especially when they're already under academic pressure, so you’re definitely not alone.
Apprenticeships can be a great alternative if you prefer learning through real work experience while still gaining qualifications. You’re right that they can be competitive, but so is university. Focus on choosing the path that fits you.

Degree Apprenticeships
These might be a really good option for you. They allow you to:

Work for an employer and earn a salary

Study part‑time for a fully funded degree (usually a BSc or BEng)

Build experience that often leads to a permanent job

They’re offered in areas like Software Engineering, Digital & Technology Solutions, Cyber Security, Data Science, and more. With the A levels you’re studying you’d be a strong candidate.

Software Engineering Apprenticeships
If you think you might want to go into software engineering, this is one of the biggest areas for degree apprenticeships. Companies like BT, Dyson, IBM, Jaguar Land Rover, GSK, the Civil Service recruit every year.
A few things to consider

You don’t need to have it all figured out yet

You can apply to both university and apprenticeships to keep your options open.

Start researching roles early because applications often open in the autumn of Year 13.

What you can do now

Look at gov.uk apprenticeships and the UCAS Apprenticeship Hub.

Think about what kind of work environment you prefer:

Earning while learning? Apprenticeship

More academic, flexible, and student life‑focused? University

I hope that helps,

Hi! For me personally, university itself and my course (as studying games art) really isn’t stressful at all as long as you balance it out well. The debt for me also hasn’t been an issue due to student Finance; however, I know a lot of the time student finance doesn’t cover the full accommodation fee and so I completely understand.

Apprenticeships are definitely a great route to go down but as you mentioned they are VERY competitive. If you can find an apprenticeship that you would love then ABSOLUTELY go for it!! But if you find one and you think ‘I don’t know about this one’, you might actually prefer going to university.

One thing you can always do, is set up UCAS and apply, go through the same process everyone else is doing, whilst also looking at apprenticeships. That way if you find an apprenticeship you can cancel the Uni offer, and if you don’t, you can continue to the way of Uni!!

Hope this helps!
