Parents dont want me to move away

Hi!
Im a student in Y13 hoping to study primary education at uni this September.
Ive recently decided that out of all my choices, sheffield hallam uni would be my first choice if i get an offer since I have a few friends in the area and the accommodation is affordable for me, as well as the fact I want to move quite far from home (I live in Bucks!) since I want independence and freedom which im not recieving at home as my parents are rather overprotective.

My main problem is that my parents dont want me to go university at all, really- they keep saying about me having a debt etc i dont think they really understand the process although ive tried to explain to them.
Ive been open about wanting to move out and go to a university far away but they dont support my decision at all and keep trying to convince me to stay home since its cheaper and easier, and wouldn't be able to help me with rent food etc at all if i did since we are on a lower income but arent eligible for extra help so all my finances would have to come out of my own pocket, im hoping to get a part time job of around 20 hours a week that would cover it.

Should I stick with what I want to do or think about doing something a bit more realistic and commuting like theyd prefer me to?

Hello,

Have you applied to maintenance loan yet? if you are on a lower income you might be eligible for the maximum maintenance loan which might cover your rent if you moved out for uni. If not, it will be difficult managing between saving up for rent and food all while focusing on your education, in this case commuting would be better.

Why not apply to Oxford Brookes - their course is really good and it's much nearer home. You might be able to persuade them that you'll keep in contact but, of course, you need to move out.

I’m on the same page as you and wanting to go to Hallam but I live 45 mins away
My daughter has gone the other way. We live 25 minutes drive from Sheffield Hallam but she's at uni in Bucks. Funny that.

Hi, first of all, I want to say that i am sorry you are not supported by your family in your choice. Pursue higher education is a meritable goal, the driving force behind academic achievement, personal growth, and professional advancement. I don't know what to say about finance though, many students have part time jobs, but fully supporting themselves might prove difficult. I think it is best to make sure if you are eligible for support, perhaps your school can help with that? I wish you all the best for your future
