Applying for the RAF Student Nurse Programme at 17 – Advice Needed

Hi everyone,

I’m currently looking into applying for the RAF Student Nurse programme, and I’m planning to submit my application around September/December 2026. At that point, I’ll still be 17, which makes the decision feel even more significant, as it’s one of the first big adult steps I’ll be taking. I understand the application process involves several stages, including the initial application, interviews, fitness and medical assessments, and then training if successful. It’s something I’m genuinely motivated to work towards, and I’m trying to prepare myself as thoroughly as possible—academically, physically, and mentally.

If I’m successful, I would have just turned 18 by the time I leave for training, and it would be my first time being away from home for an extended period. The idea of being away from my family and everything familiar for around 10 weeks feels both exciting and quite daunting. I’m really looking forward to the independence, structure, and learning opportunities the programme offers, but I’m also worried about things like feeling homesick, settling into such a disciplined environment, or finding it difficult at the start.

I’d really appreciate any advice from people who have been in a similar position or who’ve gone through the RAF Student Nurse programme themselves. How did you cope with being away from home for the first time? Are there any ways to prepare mentally before leaving, or things you wish you’d known beforehand? I’d also love to know what it’s like socially—how easy is it to make friends and feel part of a team?

Finally, I was wondering whether you’re able to see or contact your family at all during the 10-week training period, or if it’s completely away from home. Any tips, reassurance, or personal experiences would mean a lot and would really help me feel more confident and prepared for this next step.
