How to get back into the swing of things after a long break

Welcome back to another term at university 😊. After such long and fun holiday, you might find it difficult going back into studying regularly. But there are a few ways to ease yourself into it

One of the main things that can help you studying is setting a routine. With the holiday, your sleeping schedule is probably a mess🫩. So, you need to start small.

Reset your sleeping schedule by sleeping 15-30 minutes earlier every night. By the end of an early morning week, your body will need early rest.

Your first week has started and the content is already heavy?

Gradually reengage yourself into studying: watch a Youtube video that introduces the content of the lecture, start by reading one article or briefly read through the lecture’s learning outcomes.

Lastly, coming out from Christmas and new year’s celebratory vibes, your brain might still be adapted to the “fun mode”:

Set yourself a studious environment by cleaning your desk, adding pictures, getting a new notebook that can get you excited to start using it, and add fun bits like decorations that lightens up the studying atmosphere 🪞🔮.

Hi!

Some things that help to get me back into the swing of things after a long break at uni are:

Trying to set a routine for myself. Routines really help me to be motivated, so whenever I have had a break I make sure that I try and get back into a routine as soon as I can.

Try and do small bits of reading each day in the first week just to get you back into the swing of things. Usually in the first week, I end up not doing much so I have recently been trying to make sure I do a bit every day to get back into it.

I always try and have some fun plans scheduled so it doesn't feel too hard getting back to work. I always try and have something good planned with my housemates or friends from my course!

I hope some of this helps,

Hi @Kingston Sarah 👋

Great advice here! I would like to add something too:

Firstly, welcome back everyone to the spring term! Hope it has been an amazing break for everyone and you are ready to take on the next term all refreshed and energised!

One thing you could do is easing back into your routine slowly and planning your days.

Another thing is yes sleeping early because you have classes the next day so rest!

Finally, remember to take your time on lecture notes, get settled in first and do them slowly so you are focused and have detailed notes because you just had a break and you need time to get back up and running 🙂

Good luck for this term everyone, I am sure it will go amazing!

Hey,

Those are great tips and honestly so relatable after a long break 😅

A few things that usually help me get back into the uni mindset:

I like to set myself one clear goal for the day, even if it’s something small like organising my notes or replying to emails. It helps me feel productive without being overwhelmed straight away.

I find it really useful to plan my week ahead, even loosely. Writing down lectures, deadlines and a bit of study time makes everything feel more manageable and helps me ease back into studying.

Taking regular breaks and rewarding myself helps a lot. Whether it’s a walk, a hot drink, or an episode of a show, having something to look forward to makes getting started much easier.

Hope this helps a bit, good luck with the new term!
